Cell Phone Tips

Today I will go over some tips and tricks that many of you may or may not know about.

1. Many, but not all, cell phone models will allow 911 emergency calls to be made even if the phone lacks a SIM card, the keypad is locked or the account is not active.

2. Instead of dialing 411 to get information, dial 800-FREE-411. You have to listen to a short commercial but it’s better than the $1.79 or more your provider charges for calling information!

3. Want your name to show up on Caller ID systems when you call a land line? Call your service provider. They can set it up so your name shows, or alternatively, “Wireless Caller” shows.

4. Receive Amber Alerts on you cell phone by going to their website and signing up. You can choose the area(s) you want the alerts for. The service providers that work with this service have agreed not to charge for the text messages.

5. While browsing the web, you can send small snippets of text to your phone. Google Labs offers and extension for Firefox called Google Send To Phone. You highlight the wanted text, press a phone icon and enter the number you want the text sent to.

6. Recycle your old cell phone. You may or may not heard of “Cell Phones For Soldiers“. A not for profit organization created by 2 teenagers to provide calling cards to Soldiers overseas. They take your old cell phone (Doesn’t matter how old it is) and turn it into a phone card which is then sent to soldiers to allow them to call their families.

I will add more later, right now it’s off to work! :)
