Hyundai Genesis Coupe Heats up the Pony Car Wars

Posted by on Apr 27, 2010 | 5 Comments

Back in the day, the Mustangs and Camaros fought off challenges from upstart American cars. In order to do battle properly in the pony car wars, you had to have a V8 engine under the hood. Fewer than eight cylinders didn’t deliver the horsepower or the cred.

Things sure are different these days. The current crop of pony cars changes the game, if not the perception, and the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is case in point.

Ford and Chevy are going all out in the pony car battle, on both the V8 and V6 fronts. Marketing campaigns for the latest V6 models tout fuel efficiency right along with horsepower. The Genesis Coupe might appear to be undergunned, as it enters the battle with less power and lower fuel economy than the leader of the pack.

Cue up that Gomer Pyle sound byte, and get ready for a surprise, surprise

Having a 14 year old son who is very nostalgic about the muscle cars of the 60′s and 70′s, I have to question anybody calling the Genesis coupe a Pony car. Dont get me wrong, I love the coupe, and the two cars I own happen to be both Kia and Hyundai so I love the product as well, but I don’t think the terminolgy is correct. A Mustang, Charger, and Camaro are pony cars, whereas to me the Genesis coupe falls more in the category of a Subaru WRX or Nisson 370 Nismo which I would classify as a tweeker car instead. If we are unable to keep the American Pony Car alive and well, at least we can keep the die hard, tried and true deifinition alone.

Ah, controversy. :) The WRX is AWD and the 370 is a two seater. Now if Hyundai dropped a V8 into the RWD Genesis …
