Ford Taurus: Stealthy Cool

Can a Ford Taurus be cool?

Once upon a time, the Taurus was nearly ubiquitous. Year-after-year, the Taurus was the best-selling car in America in the nineties. But a pair of redesigns missed the mark and Taurus sales plunged. America fell out of love with the big sedan. Things were so bad that Ford shelved the Taurus nameplate in the 2008 model year, choosing instead to rename the car the Ford Five Hundred.

The plan didn’t work. The Five Hundred failed to hit the mark.

Legend has it that when Ford CEO Alan Mulally joined the company, he quickly moved to revive the Taurus nameplate and gave Ford’s engineers and designers the task to build the coolest Taurus ever.

The 2010 Ford Taurus stands as proof: the mission was successful.

The new Taurus can be equipped with a remarkable amount of technology that only starts with the Microsoft Sync audio system. The ride is smooth. The cabin is wonderfully quiet and comfortable. The trunk is cavernous.

Other than the gas mileage (which remains in the mid-twenties on the highway), we have few gripes with the new Taurus.

If your opinion of the Taurus is based on the old potato design, it’s time to take another look. And perhaps another ride. No bull here, the Taurus is back …
