2010 Mustang: Tradition Meets Tech

Spending time in a 2010 Ford Mustang V6 is a bit like going back to the future. Slipping behind the wheel brings back memories of every Mustang you’ve ever ridden in before. For me, those memories are quite vivid. While I’ve never owned a Mustang, I flashed back on three mid-sixties ‘Stangs that were key in my life (for various reasons) … my Uncle’s ‘65, a girlfriend’s ‘67 ragtop, and a buddy’s ‘66.

The new Mustang’s interior is unquestionably the best that’s ever been. While earlier Mustangs may be criticized for the quality of materials, the 2010 model sets a new standard. World-class leather bucket seats provide both heating and lumbar support. Microsoft SYNC delivers both the tunes and the phone calls, without lifting your hands off the wheel.

The 2010 Mustang fights it out in the new pony car wars with the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger. While it’s a bit down on power, it comes out on top in a category that might surprise you … handling.

You seem to focus on all the things that are unimportant to anyone who truly loves Mustangs (or any pony car) .

Many would immediately say that the words V6 and Mustang don’t belong within seeing distance of each other.

The entire idea of the Mustang ( you can look it up in several places) was building a car that was fun to drive, with a relatively high power to weight ratio. That is why there were plenty of big-block Mustangs (and Cougars) from Dearborn.

As someone who owned 3 Cougars (390HP, 428CJ, and 351C), I can say that if the Mustang is not capable of flattening your eyeballs upon acceleration, it is not worthy of the name.

@Oracle – Ford’s sold boatloads of six cylinder Mustangs over the years. The 2010 is the best of the bunch … until they drop the twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 between the fenders. 350-odd HP is nothing to sneeze at … =)

There is no substitute for cubic inches, ask anyone who knows the difference between 500 hp developed by 428ci or the sam hp developed by 300 ci and 10#’s boost.

Fans of muscle cars will vote for the former every time. Torque is what provides the thrills. Low end torque. It is why the well-moneyed today would buy a Shelby Cobra over a equivalent era Ferrari or Lamborghini.

@Oracle – Torque? I hear ya! :) The traditional stuff is wicked cool, but times have changed. EcoBoost’s calling card is diesel-like torque curves …

I’ve only been in an EcoBoost Lincoln MKS for a quick trip around Pocono Raceway in the rain (without a camera rolling, alas). When this technology lands in the Mustang, it’ll be a game changer.

I think the new Camaro is of note and long over do. The current sales figures prove it. 3 to 1 in favor of the Camero in which in 6cl form has plenty of power, more than the Mustang. (under 24 grand!)
