Looking to increase your gas mileage?
If your car has an instant fuel economy gauge, turn it on and leave it on. Conscientious use of an instant fuel economy display will increase your mileage and can save a significant amount of money over the long term.
If your car does not have a built-in instant fuel economy display, you can add an aftermarket unit that taps into any post-1996 vehicle’s OBD port. It’s not complicated … these gauges are plug-and-play.
While the ScanGaugeII has been the choice of many fuel-efficient drivers, there’s new competition on the block.
Auto Meter is set to release the Ecometer, a slickly-designed gauge with a distinct visual approach, at a price point roughly half of the ScanGaugeII.
I’m a big fan of the ScanGaugeII … it provides loads of features, is highly configurable, and can even read the error codes from your vehicle’s computer. (Just last week I used my ScanGauge to diagnose the idiot lights on my wife’s Honda.)
But the ScanGaugeII is overkill for most folks. The simple and inexpensive Ecometer hits the spot for Mom and Pop.
There are no magic bullets to fuel efficiency. The biggest single thing you can do to increase gas mileage in your current vehicle is to change the manner in which you drive. An instant fuel economy gauge will put you in tune with your engine …

The ScanguageII is awesome, just don’t leave it in direct sunlight! I should have known better, but ended up killing all the backlight LEDs - still works like a charm though.
Also, in some states they’ll fail you for inspection if you have anything plugged into your ODBII port.
