Yaris Review: Toying with 50 MPG

I’d been following the Toyota Yaris gas mileage threads for quite a while, with more than a bit of skepticism. As Toyota’s entry-level car, the Yaris is marketed to a different audience then those interested in a more expensive hybrid model. It sounded too good to be true. The claims of fantastic real-world results that rivaled those of the hybrids got me revved up to test the little critter.

After a week long road test of the Yaris, over hundreds of miles, I was left nothing less than amazed.

When it comes to MPGs, this little car delivers the goods.

The MPGomatic Toyota Yaris Review is an eye-opener. Forget about everything you may have seen or heard. It is indeed possible to get 50 miles per gallon on the highway without buying a hybrid (as long as you drive in a relatively conscientious manner) …

Get a “scangauge” digital meter for about $150 and you can improve your MPG’s , In my 2005 Colorado pickup that gets 24mpg EPA, I can easily get above 30mpg and often can get 35 mpg out of it , it’s a cool device that tells you in real time what you MPG is and tracks it for your trips , tank, etc.. It helps you learn how to drive more efficiently.

I almost always see 33 mpg on trips to and from work or the store , these trips average 50+ miles typically.. getting 10 mpg over the EPA estimate that most people have a hard time archiving is pretty impressive.. I tried eecking out better mileage with out the scangauge, to no avail, the real time feedback from the gauge truly trains you to drive for better MPG’s.

For those that are in for more MPG stuff I recommend going to ecomodder.com , My Areocrx project that was featured in popular mechanics is posted there along with other drastic MPG makeovers , like Basjoo’s Areocivic.

I’m getting 53+ Mpg out of a 1987 Honda crx with some, well lets say drastic mods.. My worst mileage in this modified car has been 47 mpg and that was driving fast and hard in poor conditions for getting good MPG.

The Yaris is a great car from everything i have heard, id love to get a scangauge on it and in the proper hands that really know how to get good MPG’s out of vehicles. You’d be shocked by what “adjusting the nut behind the wheel” will do for your MPG.

The feat of getting 50 MPG out of a non-hybrid has been possible for a while. As a witness I call on my ‘94 Geo Metro, it can get 52.3 MPG going up the Rocky Mountains - and it still runs like a dream.

@Jason - Check out the second video … ScanGaugeII FTW! Ecomodder’s a cool site … I’ll go digging for your AeroCRX. I’ve always had a soft spot for the CRX … miss my old ‘86 si … =)

I could have gotten a bit more than 50 MPG out of the Yaris given enough time, patience, and good weather.

@Duane - The value of your Metro must have quadrupled in the last year, eh?

How can the scangaugeā€ digital meter for about $150 improve gas mileage? Does it void the warrenty?

@Thomas - The ScanGaugeII allows you to see the data that’s hidden in your car’s ECU. Once you have access to the real-time data, you’ll need to make adjustments to your driving style. The SG merely plugs into your car’s OBDII port … it shouldn’t void the warranty, but you can always check with your car’s manufacturer just to be safe.
