40 MPG In A $1000 Car… No Way? Way!

Can’t stand getting squeezed at the gas pump and in your car payments?

You don’t have to spend twenty thousand bucks or more to buy a car that gets 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

You can go cheap. Really cheap.

Really really really cheap…

Submitted for your approval: 100 dirt-cheap cars that get 40+ miles per gallon on the highway.

But be warned… they’re not pretty…

I have a 2007 Corolla. $12K. With a switch to a low-restriction air-filter, synthetic oil, and a few other things I went from 37mpg to a shade under 42 (which number is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything). I have heard of Corolla users getting even better mileage with this five-passenger, nice-looking car. Too bad USA auto manufacturers are totally clueless. I had an aquaintance who owned a Europa in the 70’s (with the small engine) who got almost 40mpg, and thousands of SMILES per galloon! :)

At least one U.S. automaker was temporarily not clueless - some of the first Saturns in the late ’90s with 4-cylinder engines and stick shifts got around 39-41 mpg on the highway (if the air conditioning was turned off). I’ve verified this on many trips. Unfortunately, this good-looking small car was panned by many critics as being uninspired and “merely adequate”, and was replaced by bigger, uglier, squarish boxes that soon developed reputations as maintenance hogs with greatly reduced fuel economy. No doubt that at least made the oil companies happier.
