I just got an email from “domainrenewal-online.com,” letting me know that “It is time to renew your domain name.” With all the domains I own, I get these emails all the time. The problem is, domainrenewal-online.com is not my domain registrar. I’ve never used them. Not once. Not ever. This led me to believe that they were trying to pull a fast one …
Ah, if it were that easy to flash the domain renewal scam past my eyes …
Your domain name [removed] will expire within 90 days. You may renew your domain automatically with Domain Renewal. Click on the link in this e-mail to renew the domain for another year. You should renew your domain as soon as possible in order for it to continue to be registered in your name.
Click here if you wish to renew your domain
My interest was piqued, so I clicked.
Good thing I wasn’t drinking anything or I would have spit it out my nose … domainrenewal-online.com was asking a mere $69.95 USD to renew the domain for a year. Gee whiz, only seven times what I normally pay.

Thanks for the warning. I got a similar email this morning. It sounded fishy because my hosting provider sent me an email just the day before with conflicting information on the domain renewal process. I Googled domainrenewal-online and found your blog and warning.
You saved me some time, money and asprin.

Thanks for the info. A variation on the “Domain Registry of America” scam methinks! I’ll post a warning on several portals I use.
$70 eh? What a bargain (not!!)

I’ve been getting these for years by snail mail from companies that try to sell you domain renewal for $29.99 to $49.99 a year.
Basically, there are a lot of domain owners whose domains were registered for them by their web designer. They know bupkis about the registration process or who they’re registered with or how much it costs. And they’re not the types to actually read the fine print that says “we’re not your registrar, but we will be once you pay us to renew your registration.”
It’s that kind of ignorance that these companies prey on.
