Amp’d Mobile Unplugged

The lights go out at pre-paid cell phone provider Amp’d Mobile on Tuesday … on the heels of the demise of SunRocket last week. Coincidence? The beginning of the end of the telcom startups? Or just part of an inevitable phase of consolidation? Amp’d, like Sunrocket, had to burn a considerable amount of marketing dollars to get where they are, which is, of course … nowhere.

If you’re an Amp’d customer you better get your customer service ASAP, because customer service will be a memory after today. The Amp’d FAQ page tells the tale.

So who stands to benefit from this bonanza? The easy button was just pushed for Boost, Virgin, T-Mobile, Verizon, Tracfone, and basically any company that sells disposaphones (prepaid cell phones).

If you’re an Amp’d customer (make that a former customer), you may want to drop your old mobile in the proverbial cell phone recycling bucket to see if you might be able to recoup a whopping dollar or two.

Why would one get rid of a perfectly good phone? Moving to another CDMA [Verizon, AllTel, etc.] provider’s pre-paid plans would be similar to AMP’ed service.
