My $20 Prepaid Cellphone

I finally bit the bullet and picked up a new cell phone about a month ago. It was long overdue. I went cold turkey after my Sidekick kicked the bucket, going sans cell phone for an entire year. No doubt some folks will be aghast that anyone could live without a cell phone, in this day and age, but someone had to do it. And I’m here to tell the tale.

There are two factors in my life that made this possible …

To start with, I work from home. I’m not out on the road very often, and when I am, I’m most often traveling with one or more family members.

Which bring us to the next factor … silly though it may seem, everyone else in my family has a cellphone. They live on the family plan.

I was doing pretty well without a cellphone of my own until I had to leave town for a business trip. The thought of hitting the highway and being away from the ranch without a phone gave me the willies.

After much gnashing of teeth, I broke down and bought the finest prepaid cellphone that $20 would buy. I ended up with a tiny little Nokia, packed with 300 of the finest prepaid minutes that Tracphone could bundle.

All for one measly picture of Andrew Jackson.

Quite honestly, I didn’t expect much for the minimal outlay. With that in mind, I ended up with a pretty good value for the dollar. I consider this my in-between phone. It’s a severely limited phone by all accounts, but hey, what can you expect for just twenty bucks?

I’m waiting for Apple to finally launch their long-rumored iPhone. Kevin Rose’s iPhone leak had me frothing at the mouth, although I still might distracted by something shiny in the meantime, say Samsung’s Blackjack.

Whatever I get has to have a real keyboard and a worthy MP3 player …

Until then, my $20 prepaid cellphone will do just fine.
