Air Conditioner Filters

Memorial Day lit the blast furnace around these parts. But I resisted the temptation and didn’t crank up the A/C (much to the kids dismay). I trudged down to the basement this morning to replace the central air conditioner filter, in anticipation of the blessed event. After all, maintaining a clean central air conditioner filter is essential for optimum efficiency, right? But pulling out our old A/C filter? Now that was a shocker …
Our central air conditioning filter was hideous!
Holy cow … who wants to breathe that stuff? Okay, so maybe it wasn’t the worst I’ve seen, but sheesh …
I thought I changed the filter a couple of months back. Maybe it was a few.
I’ve always tried to keep at least one spare air conditioner filter wrapped up and on the shelf. Having a filter on hand takes that excuse away. Alas, I don’t always remember to pick up a pack of air conditioner filters when I’m at Home Depot or Lowes.
That’s gunna change. I’ve made a vow to be more aggressive about changing filters and marking down each change date on the air handler. Simple stuff. Who wouldn’t want their A/C unit to deliver the maximum flow of clean cold air with the least electricity?
Next up: dragging the window A/C unit into the office/computer room …

The indoor filter is important but you need to keep the outside one
cleaned out also, you have to stop it, pull the breaker on it, take it
apart and use a waterhose with a good blaster nozzle on the end and
clean it from the inside out, which cleans out all the mud and gunk
that has collected for the past year…you mean you never did it…
well, that’s what the airconditioner people are counting on, that you
never do it, that way when you call them to come fix it, they do the
same procedure and charge you a service call plus parts, and they
usually find something broken that needs replacing, especially on a
unit like that that originally cost a few grand.
