FEMA On Ice

FEMA’s caught a raft of heat in the weeks since Hurricane Katrina left its trail of devastation. This latest revelation blows yet another chilly wind on the agency and its decision-making process. According to reports from WCSH in Portland, the federal government purchased nearly 170 million pounds of ice for the Katrina relief effort from the Midwest. The ice was transported by tractor trailer to the Gulf Coast. What happened next is a jaw-dropper….
When FEMA discovered that they had more ice than they needed, they decided to have the ice put in cold storage until the end of hurricane season. Good idea to hold onto the cargo, no doubt.
So where did they ship the ice?
Why all the way to Maine, of course!
FEMA ordered hundreds of trucks from the Gulf Coast to Maine.
Unloading is going slow at the cold storage warehouse, which can only handle four trucks at a time at their loading docks.
It will take days to unload the trucks, never mind Rita.
