Cell Phone Donation Goes AWOL

When I wrote that cell phone recycling makes good cents (er, sense) I meant it wholeheartedly. After all, who could argue with keeping bad stuff out of the landfills, while getting good stuff into the hands of those that need it? But while some folks are truly needy, others are sadly opportunistic (at best). Today’s tale of (allegedly) misrouted charity donations is an eye-opener …

WFMY News 2 in Greensboro, NC reports that some cell phones that were to be donated for charity wound up being sold on eBay … for profit (and not for charity).

The evil eye focuses on a former Cingular Wireless store employee in Colorado.

When the former employee allegedly asked his customers if they wanted to donate their phones to charity, those customers likely had no idea that he could possibly be the charity, rather than a battered women’s shelter.

Cell phone recycling still makes good sense … just be sure to check out the entities that are doing the job before you drop that old cell phone in the proverbial slot …
