Flash SEO a No Go?

When put in the right hands and used for the right purpose, Macromedia’s Flash is one formidable file format. But there’s one area where the experts agree that Flash is sorely lacking: search engine optimization (SEO). Websites that rely heavily on Flash for the delivery of content fall short when it comes to providing an abundance of tasty food for the search engine spiders. Flash and SEO are like oil and water …

A well-designed conventional website fans its page content for all the search engines to find. Sites designed around Flash tend to bury their content inside the SWF files. SWF-capable search engines are still in the minority. While Google and Alltheweb now reportedly have the ability to comb through and index SWF files, Flash SEO is still a tough row to hoe.

A session at this week’s Flashforward2005 conference in San Francisco tackled the thorny topic. Check out this article about the Flashforward SEO session at c|net’s news.com.

As this is a 2005 post, the world has changed quite a bit lately.

Adobe announced working on better indexing of Rich Internet Applications just recently. The changes are on the way.

But until Adobe and the search giants haven’t worked it out entirely, one can be advised to get a custom solution for the indexing, a Content Management System that is SEO-friendly, e.g. backbone3 with Flash SEO package.
