By now, I’m sure that most of you have had some experience with geeks.pirillo.com. For those of you who haven’t used it; it’s a social network. Notice, I didn’t say “another social network,” or “God help us, not another MySpace!” Geeks.pirillo.com is an actual social network. What makes it so successful? Chris Pirillo has taken all of his dedicated fans and given them a place to interact. Mostly, these are people who have been watching Chris for some time, and many of these people have interacted with each other in his stream chat, or on his blogging site, lockergnome.com . If you’re a Pirillo fan, you’ll find many familiar faces on geeks, and you’ll also be able to interact with these people on an entirely different level.
Sure, you can post pictures, invite friends, and post music; however, the discussions on geeks.pirillo.com are what make the site truly shine. Post a discussion topic on the site, and you’ll find that, often, there will be a response waiting for you by the time you refresh. If you’re extremely interested in a topic, join or create a group. Here, you can unite with similar geeks.
Geeks doesn’t ask you the traditional profile questions. You’ll answer questions like: “What is the geekiest thing you’ve ever done?” and “What makes you laugh?” Instead of throwing you into a throng of millions of people you don’t know, geeks places you in a tight-knit community of people you probably know, or at least want to know. Out of all of the social networks I’ve tried, geeks is absolutely the closest to the true meaning of social networking. Chris should be proud of his latest achievement; it truly stands out in a world that Facebook and MySpace have dominated for so long.
