Seinfeld Ad Makes Windows Users Go “Huh?”
Now, I’ve waited to comment on this ad because I was hoping that something else from Microsoft would come along to make sense of it. Unfortunately, the gentle giant has left me dissapointed. So, apparently Microsoft’s strategy for appealing to the Apple generation involves hiring a 54 year old jewish actor, known for a sitcom that ended nearly a decade ago. Bravo Microsoft, you know how to reel ‘em in. Now, aside from the fact that Jerry Seinfeld shares my birthday (April 29, not 1954), I find nothing spectacular about this “monumental” ad campaign. Aside from this star of yesteryear, the commercial seems to strive for no point or purpose. Is Microsoft pandering to the needs of 50 somethings; do they believe that 50 is the new 20? I experienced a hint of entertainment when Gates did that uncomfortable little dance (apparently he’s not a frequenter of the local dance clubs), but the short provided not even the smallest hint of info regarding Microsoft or its computing solutions. While the Mojave Experiment was definitely not without its flaws, it was at least a semi-intellegent attempt at tackling the bad press it’s received from the brilliant campaigns by Apple. If Microsoft is planning on tackling the cult of Jobs, its either going to have to start pumping out useful products, or hire an intelligent advertising team. At the moment, it seems that Microsoft is doing neither. Don’t get me wrong, I want Microsoft to succeed; however, it appears that the company has grown so comfortable with its market share that it is no longer concerned with making products that outshine its competitors. After all, when your operating system comes bundled with the majority of the world’s computers, why worry about whether people like it or not?

Sometimes, adverts work better when things aren’t 100% correct. Besides that, I understand the ad.

So what don’t you like about Jerry Seinfeld, that he’s 54? an actor? or that he’s Jewish?

A like Jerry Seinfeld. I just feel that there were much better alternatives as well as strategies to tackling this.

The ad is not aired where I live (Seinfeld was, BTW) but I saw it on Youtube.
Last time I checked, a company ad had the purpose of either selling a product (advertising) or making the public feel good about the company (public relations).
IMHO, this ad does neither. It is an absurd comical sketch for two gentlemen, that’s all. In my country we had a tv program called Herenleed (there’s a clip available on Youtube) that was all about that kind of sketches. That is what the Microsoft ad reminded me of. It did not make me change my mind about Vista.
