Is WALL-E Inappropriate Propaganda?

  • No Related Post

I must preface the fact that I saw WALL-E for a second time today with this, my little cousin wanted me to go with her. My aunt also went along on this cinematic adventure. Towards the end of the movie, my aunt turned towards my little cousin and said “This is why we have to take care of the environment.” I admit that WALL-E does have an overt Go Green theme; however, I’ve heard it argued several times that this message is mere propaganda and should not be incorporated into a children’s movie. I can’t say that I agree.

It’s amazing to me that the whole idea of Green seems to be divided with party lines. Until more recently, many Republicans tended to promote the idea that global warming doesn’t exist. Many still favor extending oil drilling to protected habitats. Democrats tend to favor alternative energy, less drilling, and making companies conform to environmental standards. These lines have since been skewed by the inconvenience caused by high gas prices. Its amazing how fast someone will club a baby seal, if there is a chance that their gas prices will lower a dollar.

So is it so bad to create a film that encourages children to recycle? Is it so bad to promote an active lifestyle and individuality? I say no. Now if the film told children to have their parents vote for Obama, I would take offense. The film also attacks the idea of the brand, of having one company provide all of the goods for everyone.

This post is more of a jumping off point to see what you guys think? Have you seen WALL-E? Do you find its message appropriate for children?

It’s a cute film. Why look at it in a political aspect? I say that you should go check it out and enjoy :)

And even if it were to say “vote Bill O’Reilly!”, I wouldn’t take too much offense. As a movie goer, you have the right to stay in or walk out of the theatre (and to receive a possible refund too).

My 2 cents.

I did watch Wall-E. I thought it was a pretty good movie. On the point of it being propaganda well of course it is. But common it IS still a children’s animated movie. I don’t think they are really going to be focused on that. They are still kids. And even if they do, there’s nothing wrong with recycling and trying to be environmentally healthy. If anything I think they should have more movies especially those for children that promote these acts in a way thats on there level. Would you rather have there heads filled with violence and the like. Great film great message.

Hmm, i don’t think its a bad idea to incorporate a slight environmental message into a childrens movie, maybe some kids who see it will realize what it means and might try to do something about it later in life, though i highly doubt that because many kids watching the movie probably wont even notice many of the messages.

Yes, I see what you mean. Wall-e was a great movie but there are tons of messages in that movie its hard to name them all.

I saw Wall-E and it was amazing. I message is great for everyone on this planet, it shows us something that at the rate we are going won’t be to far down the road.

I hope that everyone who saw this movie thinks about the environment a little more.

On a side note this is the first Disney movie since the classics to have a great message.

Just another in a LOOOOOOONG series of distractions. Global warming is the least of your worries. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

I have not seen the movie, but the ideas behind it sound most admirable. Thanks for doing a review on this movie!
As to E2001, yes, there are a lot of issues to address. The environment however is an important issue, it sustains us, feeds us, and gives us a place to live. Perhaps you can find another planet to live on?
