Televised Presidential Debates…What is the Point?

It’s pretty safe to say that most people have watched one of the Presidential Candidates Debate this political season, but do these debates have any true affect on voters? Debates have evolved quite a bit since the first debate back in 1960. Nowadays candidates are “coached” by a debate expert who can help their candidate learn how to properly express their rehearsed one-liners and attack lines on their debate opponents. In my opinion, the debates of today appear to be a theatrical rehearsal of cheap, and often quite bland, one-liner personal attacks on the other candidate. Instead of a candidate expressing what they feel they can offer as President, they choose to spend their precious TV time on cheap lines that some campaign manager thought would run well at the top of newscasts around the country.
Specifically, when it comes to Obama and Clinton debates you know, as a viewer, that you are bound to hear some cheesy jokes said, a few misrepresentations, oh and always a few comparisons to some unknown lobbyist…
On the Republican side it is a different story simply because there are no debates being run the past few weeks. McCain has taken a huge and conquering lead over Huckabee…
In the end, Debates, in my mind, have lost their importance. Even the media funnels specific angles of debates on their nightly news or daily newspapers; but that is another whole story in itself.
What do you think? Are Debates losing their importance with the average voter?
