Moving towards OS X

  • No Related Post

About four months ago I purchased my first Apple computer in the form of an iMac running Windows XP Professional via Bootcamp (Windows was needed for a few programmes that were essential for work purposes). I have been really happy with the new operating system (OS10.5 - Leopard) and have only ventured over to the Windows side when it had been absolutely essential.

In order to help me at first I would watch tutorials on YouTube and picked up a great deal of absolute basics quickly and in an entertaining way. I still use YouTube a lot to continue to develop my knowledge. It must be the easiest way to become familiar with a whole new operating system and hardware setup. I like the mac so much I am going to invest in a second machine - a new macbook pro 15 inch as soon as I can afford it so that I can be mobile. I have been lucky enough to have access to a work’s MacBook (the white model) but it is sometimes needed for other things and that can be difficult to arrange.

I think that anyone thinking of trying out Apple needs to do just that. Find some way of trying it out - even if it is in a store. Also start to visit YouTube and search for videos on specific basic topics regarding the mac. That way, you will either grow towards the OS or away from it the more you familiarise yourself with it. That said, though. There comes a point where you can only make progress with a machine of your own to play around with. Rookies need to remember that, by installing Windows XP (Not Vista) they are not burning their bridges when they but a mac. Windows will be there for them but they should (and probably will) avoid using it too much. They will need to become familiar with OS X.

I use Windows machines every day at work so I have not really ‘changed over’ at all. I have merely expanded my computing experience.
