Internet a Form of Escapism?

There are basically six types of people on this technology we call the Internet. We have the people who use it every once in a while and could function without it shall be from hereon referred to as the e-lights. Then you have two classes of people within the “business” type people on the internet. The ones that use it for profitable business selling goods and products shall be from hereon referred to as the e-bizzes, and the other “business” ones shall be from hereon referred to as the e-porns. Then there are the e-socialites who thrive on being the center of attention of the virtual world ranging from troll to celebrity. Then there are the e-scapists.
The e-scapists are people who normally have little to no friends offline and their whole life revolves around the Internet and their computer. They can be found in chatrooms, games, forums, instant messengers, etc. Their number is on the rise. You have some who are the more socialites who say stuff like, “The world hates me,” so that they can be the center of attention. Some people who are in this group however are online because the Internet is the only place they can find that they can fit in or be what they wish they could be in their offline world. These people can be very friendly, but some can be quite frightening. The more frightening ones tend to take everything seriously and tend to lash out at people who speak against them. They tend to hold grudges and think people who may be joking around actually hate them. They tend to seem to be bipolar because they can change their mood almost instantly. One minute they’ll hate you and then the next, they’ll have forgotten what you say, unless it really really made them angry. And if they do forget, expect that eventually, in the future they’ll randomly remember it and try to take vengeance upon them.

Hmm.. well… I wrote that above this because I believe that I’m an e-scapist on the more frightening side. I honestly take things so seriously to the point that I’ve cried because I thought I lost online friends or that people really hated me. It’s hard not to take things seriously, but I’m trying. My prognosis is not good, but meh, if they can’t like me for me, why should I care? Now I wanna hear, “Third Eye Blind - She Likes Me For Me”. OH and for those of you who don’t know, I swordofdestiny DJ for www.PowerFrag.FM every Monday night from 8-10 pm EST. My genre ranges from dance/electronica all the way to punk, rock and I limit myself to ONE country song per set, and that’s normally either Alan Jackson - Farewell Party or David Allen Coe - You Never Even Called Me By My Name as my last song. Of course if it’s requested, I can break the country song limit.

Bill: There are two types of e-scapists. So, that logically means… I put 6 types of internet users. But if I have to clarify I guess… E-lights, E-bizes, E-porns, E-socialites, and E-scapemos E-scapescaries. Okay?

I totally agree about the different type of users on the Internet, although I do believe there are more catagories then you think.

There is another form of e-scapist and I am one of them…
Due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, (COPD),
the Internet is my magic carpet which enables me to
travel to all those places I’d love to go to in person, but being on 15 prescriptions and oxygen it
is almost an impossibility. I have many friends locally and even more via webcam all over the world.
There is one young lady who is an award winning photo journalist whose name is Ami Vitale that I have been
fortunate to correspond with. Check out her Website,
ami@amivitale.com and fly with me on my carpet to places even healthy people only dream about…

I think there is another : e-infoholics.
e-infoholics are folks who do not participate in the social aspects (scary or otherwise), but still use the internet alot (i.e., waste time). News, how-to/tutorial, blogs, shopping, media (video, podcasts, music), review sites, geek, mash-up sites, etc. They troll the internet and become overloaded with data, information, knowledge…much of it not very important in their real world lives.

That’s a bit simplistic. I spend my computer time looking for old, black and white movies (and colour - as long as they are from 1969 or before). I managed to set my computer up to download them automatically when I am asleep or away socialising “normally”. I probably have one of the greatest collections in private hands and will not live long enough to watch half of them, but the point I am making is that there is another class of computer user who sees the computer as purely a tool - not as a replacement for real life.

I consider communication paramount to all else within the concept and practice of human interaction. Unfortunately, society’s collective application of modern technology has reshaped the guilded gauge, thereby negating the beautiful burden (proof of one’s integrity) that defines the origin of progressive human interaction. Furthermore, the collective effort to rely on device (the vice indeed) rather than inspiration and truth has redirected, reformed, and consequently reinforced society’s illwill to bypass truth while hiding beneath the veneer of the newest definition of individuality - “THE GRANDE DELUSION”… aka, a facade. built by the proxy-moronic, for esoteric purpose (huh? …they truly co-exist? …homogenized thought nourished by the collustrum within the man made family trunk (a tree that don’t branch - the root of all evil - let us pacify ad nausea). I’m trying to dispell the collective notion that escapism is healthy, denial is only a river in Egypt, AA isn’t just for quitters, and Logic is useless. The idealization of individuality crosses great bridge of axon-dendrite within those who choose my philosophy - “…I stink, therefor I am.” Get real or get lost - “…I think, therefor I’m am,” so it goes. Who sent out the memo which states, “I think, therefor I’m spam.” Technology is not necessarily evil. Its just a vehicle that allows us to avoid reality, lie to ourselves, and trick others - deception is learned. Truthful communication is psychologically tantamount to the physiologic absolution of food and oxygen - truth, food, and O2 lead to self actualization - embrace the fleeting concept that true individuality should be unaltered, embraced and accepted, not as a reference of social status, but rather an untapped source of positive influence that just may help the world spin a little easier. Shop online for shoes and crotchless undergarmets, go out and smell your cohorts, dates, partners in crime, etc..
