If you’ve been looking at my blog then you will have noticed that I haven’t posted for a very long time and there is a reason for this. I was able to have someone set up a free blog site for me and since he is the owner of a hosting company he let me have the hosting for free and he paid for the domain for me, which was an offer I couldn’t refuse. Since I got carried away with having my own personal blog I didn’t have time for writing on here so this is my last post on Lockergnome. I am leaving this blog up so you can go back on anything (especially the Apple keyboard in windows tutorial as that seems to be my most popular post on here).

If you would like to contact me then you can e-mail me at ss3luke at gmail.com, as for my new blog site then you can catch me at luke188.com which is working fine but the design is currently being worked on. This isn’t a post to get you to go to my site I just wanted to give my last post on here as I had a lot of fun around here but I honestly think that Lockergnome has just got to “messy” for my personal preference.

Happy blogging to all!!

First off I’d just like to say sorry that I haven’t posted here for a while as I have been working on my new personal blog site so it’s been hard to find the time to come here and blog.

Anyway I downloaded chrome as soon as I seen it was available and installation went a bit funny on me for some reason but all was fine when I managed to get it installed, I’ll be breaking this review down into sections so I’ll explain bit by bit on what I like about the browser.

Interface: I do like the interface of this as its nice and tidy, no menu at the top saying file, edit etc etc however I do miss having a loading bar at the bottom. Tabs are nice and small and don’t take up a lot of room when having something like 11 tabs open so that’s very nice, when I first launched the browser I found that it opened like safari would on a Mac and not full screen and this is the first browser that I have decided to keep like it as others just didn’t look nice when being opened into that size window.

Performance: I like when you go to open a new tab that all the sites you recently went to are displayed so you can save a little time and not have to type the address in the bar at the top which I believe is called the Omni bar in this brwser? Speed is one thing I want to comment on, everybody has been saying it is really fast well I don’t notice anything really fast, to me my Firefox 3 is still the fastest browser I have used but at least chrome is faster than internet explorer which I have now fully left behind and never use anymore. The layout of websites are fine, I only mention layout as in some browsers things didn’t look right and that even happens in Firefox sometimes but Google seems to be doing ok with every site I have been on so far.

For the moment that’s all I can say as I haven’t used this browser a lot yet since I’m looking at everything I can do and testing it to see if it fits my needs which so far it does but like I said it just lacks in speed when compared to Firefox 3. If I find anything else good about this then I will list it but I am sure there are a ton of reviews for this out there already as loads of people seem to be loving it, even me but it just needs the better speed.

I haven’t yet signed up to this because I’m not fully sure how it works as when it asks me to sign up to something then I have to pay which from what I was told there would be some free choices but as far as I can see there isn’t.

This isn’t a review or anything I’m just curious if any of you guys have tried it and if you can let me know if everything went well and you got what you wanted. I know about the referrals thing it’s just the whole signing up thing that’s confusing me and if anybody is wondering if this is a post to get you to be one of my referrals then it’s not, like I said I haven’t signed up yet this is all mainly just a question that I would like a little guide kind of thing as an answer. E-mail if you want or you can leave a comment here in this post.

My iPhone still takes a while to turn on and when it does it acts a bit slow for the first few minutes of the switch on, I have still had some app crashes but not as many as 2.0 but it’s still something you don’t want to happen. Safari decided to crash as well at one point and I was only on the Google page so that was a bit puzzling and confusing.

Downloading apps through the app store on the phone is a bit better than the 2.0, I think I’ve only had one failed download but everything else has worked fine. The first time I bring up the keyboard for a while it lags a bit for the first few letters I tap on but it catches up after a few letters. I don’t think there is anything else to say about it really, I still have some bugs but I have noticed an improvement with some things although the syncing process still takes a while and that’s without doing the backup as I disabled that in iTunes. Any questions then feel free to contact me.

So after deleting the corrupted files I thought I’ll just download a game save as I didn’t really want to start over again, so I headed over to gamefaqs.com and looked for the save I wanted, I downloaded it and then transferred it over to the psp through usb connection. When I went to check if the game save was there well that was a corrupt file as well, so since it was corrupted I went and deleted it but the psp wasn’t able to so I had no choice but to delete it through Vista.

This is where the weirdest thing happened, I currently have a 4GB memory stick in my psp (that’s a little bit of information you’ll need to understand this story), so when I seen the folder I needed to delete in windows I went ahead and done so, part way through it said it couldn’t delete one of the folders so I just said skip that one and any other folders like it as when I clicked on try again it always seemed to fail. Well an hour had passed and it was still deleting but had somehow come up and said “is currently deleting 28GB worth of files”, ok so how can it delete 28gb worth of files from a 4gb memory stick? Over 50,000 files were being deleted which I know were not on the memory stick as I don’t have the space to fit over 50,000 files on there! In the end I had to format the memory stick through the psp system options and I had to back up everything I had before the format, anyway since that everything is working ok now, I just haven’t downloaded the game save again as I don’t want to do all that again.

Well I updated to the iphone 2.0.1 firmware today and it all went fine, if you’ve read my other iphone posts then you’ll know I have an unlocked iphone (not 3G) and I was able to just download the update through iTunes and update through that as well without a problem, well there was one little problem. If you’ve used a jailbroken iphone before then you’ll know that it will have an app called installer and the newer app called cydia. Installer isn’t compatible with the 2.0 firmware yet but cydia was but since doing the upgrade to 2.0.1 I have lost the cydia app so I now can’t get any of the thousands of free apps.

This is disappointing in a way but considering that the app store is going to be more stable in this firmware then I don’t really see anything really bad at the moment but I’m sure I will want it in the future for features such as openSSH. As for now if you own an original iphone then you can upgrade and everything will work apart from the cydia issue so enjoy!

I’ve been using the 2.0 firmware for a few weeks now and I can fully agree with others when they say that the 2.0 firmware is really buggy, can I just say that as I type this I turned my iPhone off and it’s actually froze in the process, all I have if that loading spinning circle thing and it’s not even moving but thankfully I have just got rid of it by holding both the home and power button for a short time.

Anyway back to the topic, every time I go to look at my contacts list which isn’t a huge list but it does have quite a few, it takes so long for me to see them and be able to scroll down to the person I want to get to. The phone takes a very long time to actually turn on and off and then there is the app store which when using it on the iPhone well it’s really horrible to use. If you’re going to install an app on the iPhone then I suggest you do it through the app store in iTunes on your pc or Mac as doing it on the iPhone is so unreliable, 75% of the apps I’ve downloaded have failed to install and that’s not something I want to happen especially if it’s an app I paid for.

When I click on an app to open well my iPhone just decides to restart itself for no reason, it’s happened on a various amount of apps but mainly does it with twitterrific but I know there is nothing wrong with that app so don’t let that put you off getting twitterrific as its great. Recently iTunes doesn’t even want to detect my iPhone as when I connect it I hear the sound that vista has found it but iTunes just decides to freeze and do nothing until I disconnect the phone so even iTunes itself doesn’t like the 2.0 firmware. I remember using the 1.1.3 firmware which was a buggy update as well but nothing can compare to this firmware as it’s just so disappointing, I know some people have downgraded back to 1.1.4 which I might do but to be honest I don’t like the idea of not being able to use my apps until 2.1 comes out which will hopefully be a lot easier to use.

Well I hope you guys are having fun with it all as I’m not and I am in some ways considering going back to 1.1.4 just so I have a working phone and not one that looks like it wants to die.

This is a post on how I feel about both systems.

Vista: I’m sure you’re seen my moaning posts about how bad this OS is and how it can be improved on many things which I guess it has been improved with something’s with the service pack 1 update, for the past year thought vista has been my main operating system and I am still happy to continue to use it as my main OS. I don’t have the money to upgrade and buy a Mac pro and yeah I know there are ways of getting leopard to run on non Mac machines but I’d prefer sticking to vista for now. I’m not going to go into too much detail on this as I have ranted on and on about vista so I don’t need to go into more ranting, you can read my other posts for that.

Leopard: I don’t use this as much as I use windows but it’s a great and very simple OS to use, there are some things that I think could be improved on it but there are a lot of things on this OS that are still better than Vista. I can’t really describe how simple this OS is, so user friendly and fast to get used to as soon as you open it up and boot into it. There are some things that are a bit complicated but that’s going into techy stuff, also I have found that there are so many more useful open source apps you can get for leopard.

On vista a lot of the things I own came with a price tag but with leopard almost everything was free as it was open source, things such as burn, cam twist, Mac saber (which is just for pure fun) and so much more, not to mention the automator which comes in very handy at times. Another great thing about leopard is just being able to zoom into the desktop with just a few button pressing and in windows you can’t which can be annoying at times. The list of programs out there for the Mac is just getting bigger and bigger because more people prefer using it for example I wanted a screen recording program for windows and I have still yet to find a good one but with a Mac I just done one simple search and I came across screenium which is brilliant and cheap!

I know I should probably do this myself but I recommend going to leopard without a doubt!! It’s simple, fun, great to use and has a lot of features for you to take advantage of. If you’re a gamer then you probably know not to switch to leopard as it’s not a gaming OS unless you use something like VMware fusion to have a virtual windows machine.

So I searched on Google today to come across a solution and came across this website. The main thing that site does for you is give you a link that you go to on your iPhone which isn’t just a fix it also has a scanner for you to check if you have any stuck pixels, the scan is just a few random colours on a website and you have to scroll down the page to see if you have any colours that aren’t right.

As for the solution, it’s just an animated gif file that flashes a whole bunch of colours on your screen until you stop it. I kind of knew this would be the way to get rid of it as my old psp has a dead pixel and I was told to run something exactly the same as this. I am currently running the pixel fixer at the moment and the best thing for you to do is let it run for about 30 minutes just to let it take a real effect on the screen. A direct link to the pixel fixer and the scanner can be found here.

Apple recently released the 2.1 firmware for the iPhone to beta testers and already it’s been jailbroken using the pwnage tool so this raises a question in my mind, have Apple given up on trying to stop the hackers? The 2.0 firmware was jailbroken in the beta stage and now 2.1 has been as well so are Apple going to bring in a new way of stopping people from doing this or have they just given up and are now letting people have whatever network they want on the iPhone.

Apple have improved on the unlocking on the 3G iPhone as it took a while for people to unlock the 3G model but it has been done. So have Apple finally accepted defeat or are they going to release something that will finally stop all jailbreaking and unlocking?

A question that I’d like an answer to! =)

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
