DIY: When Things Go Wrong

Owning a home can be quite a great investment, but when things start to go wrong, it can be a nightmare, sometimes. If your problems are easy enough to fix then learning how to identify the problem and fix them is not only self rewarding, but saves money too.
Just the other day I noticed there was water coming from the AC closet. I immediately shut off the air, and started inspecting the problem. My first thought was that the line was clogged, and the water was backing up in the tray. So after researching the problem in-depth, I found out that it could be the air conditioner’s condensation pipe being clogged.
So the next morning I went out to the back of the house, and found the drain pipe from the AC sure enough it was clogged up with algae, and dirt. Plus the extension pipe was covered up which did not allow a way for the water to go anywhere. After taking a little time to dig a trench and unclog the pipe all is well once again. The air condition is running great, and not only did it save me money, but it felt great to be able to fix something on my own.

Way to go Melissa! You probably saved yourself a good hundred bucks on a service call. I shake my head at all of the folks that immediately call someone, sometimes before they check the on-off switch
The internet has made it much easier for all of us to get the information and even replacement parts to do repairs ourselves. I remember having to make dozens of phone calls and drive all over town to get things I can now get with a couple of mouse clicks.
Just remember to do your homework before you start any job. And the oldest advice in the book, “Measure twice, cut once!”
