$1000 for 4GB of RAM

Any Mac owners want to fill me in on why it is so expensive to buy RAM for a MacBook? $1000 seems a bit steep just for the memory, I wouldn’t expect to pay that much for the processor. I know it can be expensive for a PC but that’s only when you buy DDR3 1066MHz + RAM and considering that this is only 667 MHz it just seems way overpriced for anyone to buy it.
You can find it at the Apple Store here.

Agreed Apple has high prices on memory. But you can safely use 3rd party memory (Crucial, etc.) for much lower cost as long as you or a friend can install it.

i agree with anthony.
you can install 3rd party memory and not pay the huge price of buying memory directly from apple. i’ve heard of people doing this with no problems at all, as long as you install it correctly. i heard that’s it’s not hard to install.

If you want cheap memory that is worthless compared to Apple’s, do what I do and get third party RAM. I got 4 gigs to add to my Mac Pro for only $360 by going to Crusial.com
Apple’s RAM is premium, I’ve had a PowerMac G5 with it and it appears faster than the average stuff you can find. It can be very expensive though, Crusial is the next best thing.

Whenever you ask “why” about the cost of Mac equipment, there is one simple reason… because they CAN. If you think MS is bad about trying to keep 3rd parties under their thumb & keeping prices artificially high by forcing a competititve disadvantage, then just look at Apple to see a company that is much worse.
I have issues with MS just like everyone else, but the price-gouging by Mac has kept me a safe distance away for years now.
