Sony has slashed its development kit

Sony has cut the price of its development kit to $10,250 with further price cuts expected when more game companies adopt the technology.

As well as cutting the price of the kit, Sony has also included extra tools developed by SN Systems, which include ProDG, SN Distributed Build System, SN Linker and SN Compiler.

Perhaps now we will start to see a lot more companies producing a wider variety of games for the PS3 and start to take more risks which will hopefully lead to games which are visually outstanding and have a good story which is engaging from the off.

XBox is on the right track with their free XNA developement kit, which has limits. Do you want to see a system dominate the game console market? Make it completely open, like a PC. Then there would be tons of games/utilities for it. But of course they would need another source of revenue since they couldn’t charge a license fee for each game. But, it would still be popular.
