How to Use Social Media for Recruitment: Cast a Wide Net
It seems like everyone these days is using social media. Facebook now boasts over 750 million users, and Twitter features over 56 million “active” accounts. LinkedIn, a social network essential for job seekers, also features 120 million members connected to over two million companies. While millions of users are on each network, these millions of users are not on every social network. If you are open to recruitment, you will want to cast a wide net and position yourself on every major social network, so that a recruiter who is only present on one does not miss finding you because you had an account only on another social network.
Casting a wide net across all the major social networks will ensure that you do not miss an opportunity for recruitment. Just as you may not have started using Twitter yet, a headhunter or HR exec for the company you dream of working with may not check their LinkedIn more than once a month, yet updates their Twitter account ten times every day. While some social media users are active on every major social network, it is unlikely that those in charge of hiring decisions will be such power users. As a result, if you are interested in being recruited, you will need to be present on all social networks so as not to be missed by any recruiter, as you never know where your next opportunity will present itself.
While being present on all social networks takes more energy than being focused on one social network, you can budget time to be just as active as possible on all the social networks necessary for recruitment. You will need to take the time set up complete profiles on all the major social networks that will attract and entice recruiters, and then remember to visit each social network once per day to post an update and respond to any other interesting posts, links, or stories. Being active and demonstrating your professional communication skills means being present, but not obsessive. Though you may spend hours per day on Facebook talking with friends and commenting on photos, this amount of time is not necessary for professional accounts on other social networks. Take the time you need to attract recruiters, but casting a wide net across other social network should not be all-consuming.
