How to Change Your Facebook Email Notification Settings
If you were one of the thousands of Facebook users suddenly bombarded last night with Facebook email notifications about anything and everything, you aren’t alone. Starting last night around 8:45 pm Pacific Time, users began to receive hundreds of emails per hour about any and all kind of activity on Facebook. Luckily, I filter all email about Facebook directly to a folder in Gmail that I then ignore, but many users took to Twitter to complain about suddenly being bogged down by an inbox of clutter.
Facebook acknowledged this glitch almost immediately last night as a known issue and said it was working to resolve the problem. In the meantime, users affected by this glitch will find that each and every email notification under Account Settings is now checked. Though Facebook doesn’t say how this happened, it appears the only solution for now is for users to manually go through their Facebook email notification settings and choose all 73 settings again.
To change your email notification settings on Facebook, log in to Facebook. Then, choose your Account in the top right corner of Facebook. From the dropdown menu, select Account Settings. On the next page, click on the Notifications tab at the top, which is third from the left. If you have been affected by this glitch, you will notice that all of these boxes to “Send a notification when someone….” will be checked – even if your deselected these boxes prior. If you want to stop receiving all of these notifications, take a few minutes and uncheck the boxes you do not want to receive email notifications about.
Another option if you were affected by this Facebook email notification glitch is to use your email account to filter emails from Facebook entirely so you stop receiving Facebook email notifications directly to your inbox. This is only recommended if you feel comfortable checking Facebook.com regularly for notifications or new messages.
