How to Improve Your Facebook Reputation with Reppler
It’s no secret that employers, both present and future, as well as colleges use Facebook to make determinations about employment and admission. Gen Y, unfortunately, doesn’t always seem to keep this in mind and makes bad judgment daily in the use of social networks like Facebook, whether in saying something inappropriate or posting pictures that place themselves in less than favorable light (especially in the eyes of an employer or college admissions counselor.) Today, a new Web-based app called Reppler launched as a way to help these Facebook users find and remove this type of questionable content on Facebook. To use Reppler, you simply connect your Facebook profile, agree to a long list of requests for permissions, and Reppler will scan your profile for potential lapses in judgment. Additionally, Reppler will scan your Facebook profile for security risks that a Facebook hacker could attack.
The guys at Reppler said on the Reppler blog that they came up with the idea when they “saw articles about how social networking profiles were being used by employers to screen job candidates and to monitor employees and by college admissions officers to check out applicants.” Reppler calls the image you have within social networking environments your “social reputation,” and with Reppler, the goal is to “help you keep your social reputation clean and safe.”
Reppler works by flagging any content on your Facebook Wall — or even on your News Feed — that might be considered inappropriate. Inappropriate content can fall into a variety of categories, including drugs, alcohol, adult content, and derogatory language. You can even tell Reppler which categories you would like monitored and how you would like to be notified if something is found. Additionally, Reppler analyzes the content on your Facebook Wall to give you a feel for how others might perceive you.
Reppler also alerts you of any privacy and security risks you have. It will highlight any publicly-available information about you that should be private and will flag any links it finds on your Facebook Wall that could be malicious, such as phishing/scams and spam.
Right now, the initial version of Reppler is free and monitors just the content in your Facebook profile. In the future, though, Reppler plans to support other social networks like LinkedIn and Twitter. To use Reppler, visit Reppler.com and connect your Facebook profile. It only takes a few minutes, and could be well worth it – especially for any and all little sisters out there looking for a summer job. Ahem.
