Find a Job Using Facebook with InTheDoor

With unemployment still hovering around 9%, the job market is tough – especially for recent college grads. Networking has never been more important than now, but luckily, with the prevalence of social networks, it has also never been easier than now. Using Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other methods of social networking can make or break a new job opportunity. A new web-based app has now made it even easier to recognize what potential professional connections you may have within your Facebook network. Have you been dreaming of a job at SEOMoz? Little did you know, you may already have a friend on Facebook who works there. Using InTheDoor, an app which “makes it easy to find jobs at your friends’ companies” by giving you “access to your complete social map”.

InTheDoor was founded by Liz Carlson after she recently started looking for a better job and was continuously rejected by jobs that she believed she was qualified for, but a machine thought otherwise. Frustrated after discovering a friend with identical qualifications was hired at Google after knowing someone, she wanted to know why she couldn’t find similar opportunities. Liz then found research that proved her pains: The odds of employment are literally stacked against job seekers who don’t have an inside source at a company to which they are applying. (Liz says the odds are 1 in 115 for job board users, and 1 in 10 for a job seeker who knows someone.) The idea for InTheDoor was then born to utilize the social connections people already have on Facebook to discover these job opportunities.

InTheDoor alerts you to which friends work at companies that are hiring, along with for what positions. You can see companies all companies in your network that are currently hiring, as all as see where your friends live and compare where jobs in your network are available. InTheDoor also provides the ability to search job opportunities exclusively in your network. If you see a job of interest, you can “ask for an introduction” to that job from the Facebook friend that is connected both to you, and that job.

The only problem with InTheDoor is that not everyone is honest about where they work. For example, I noticed that someone within my Facebook network was connected to an opportunity at Facebook. While Facebook is indeed hiring a Software Engineer, my friend – who I will not name, but is not Mark Zuckerberg – jokingly listed that he is the “CEO/Founder” of Facebook on his Facebook profile. This type of problem will likely be few and far between for InTheDoor users, but users just take heed that not every connection found by InTheDoor will be legitimate.

Though InTheDoor just launched today, Liz still has bigger ideas for the app. Soon, InTheDoor will feature the ability to see connections using your second-degree of networking, meaning you will be able to see job opportunities you are connected to via friends-of-friends on Facebook. Employers will also soon have more control over their reputation on InTheDoor, as well as be able to eventually target users.

To start using InTheDoor to find jobs at your friends’ companies, visit InTheDoor.com and connect your Facebook profile.
