Twitter Unveils the Top 10 Trending Topics of 2010

While only 8% of Americans have a Twitter account – and barely 4% use the microblogging service actively – those who do tweet can be found tweeting almost obsessively. In 2010, 25 billion tweets were shared globally (and not just about Justin Bieber.) Twitter users discussed entertainment, global disasters, and tech products. On its blog, Twitter shared the following Top 10 Trends of 2010:

1. Gulf Oil Spill
2. FIFA World Cup
3. Inception
4. Haiti Earthquake
5. Vuvuzela
6. Apple iPad
7. Google Android
8. Justin Bieber
9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
10. Pulpo Paul

Some may argue that other breaking news and entertainment were a more popular topic than, say, Justin Bieber. However, in an earlier post, Twitter explained that the pace and duration of a topic affects the algorithm that determines what becomes a trending topic – which is why #WikiLeaks rarely appeared as such. Twitter further broke down the top trends in their Year In Review to specific categories, narrowing trends to popular News, People, Movies, Television, Technology, World Cup, Sports, and the top trending Hashtags. Some popular trends that didn’t make the Top 10 were World Aids Day, The Twilight Saga, RockMelt, Cristiano Ronaldo, and the hashtag #thankful.

What were your favorite Twitter trends of 2010? Do you think the Twitter Top 10 lists are missing an important trend?
