How Fast Can You Type?

This morning all I’ve been doing is all those typing speed tests, I can’t seem to get any more than 48 words per minute, either because it’s physically impossible for me to get any faster or because I just keep mistyping things. Yet there are people that can type around 170-180 words per minute, this just seems impossible to me, especially on a QWERTY keyboard (probably the type of keyboard you’re using now, it has QWERTY in the top left hand corner of the keyboard). So is there anyway to get faster?
Well, one of the first things you could change is your typing style. It would be an advantage to learn how to type the ten fingered way and/or touch type. Here’s a web site that could help you with these http://www.df7cb.de/projects/10finger/.
Another thing that could speed you up is to change the keyboard layout. The QWERTY keyboard has one design goal in mind, to slow down your typing speed. You are probably wondering why… the QWERTY keyboard was used on typewriters to slow the fast typists down so that they didn’t jam the mechanisms in the typewriter, due to the fact that all the typists got used to this layout, this layout was carried over to computers where they still exist today, so you can see that having this layout gives you no advantage whatsoever. There is one keyboard layout called Dvorak, this has been designed so that all the most commonly typed letters are close to your fingers. It can make you twice as fast easily. It can be easily changed in ‘Control Panel’ or ‘System Preferences’.
The only key thing that you must do is practice. You know what they say, practice makes perfect… Now excuse me while I practice.
