Charging the clicker is a foundation skill which must be taught before you begin to train your dog. You need to add a meaning or value to the clicker so that it is relevant and motivating to your dog. This is achieved by pairing it with an object that has intrinsic value to your dog - tasty treats.

So when charging the clicker you are actually building an association in your dog’s mind between two unrelated objects - the clicker and the tasty treats. When the clicker is charged it takes on a similar meaning to your dog as the treats. Your dog will respond or react in a very similar fashion.
