I logged into my AdSense account today. Just my average morning checking how much $ Google has sent my way. While checking my stats, I noticed I had a new email from Google. This message was from the optimization team. They wanted to tell me how to optimize my site. I think, great, I can always use more tips. Here is the message I see:

Dear Publisher,

Here is your optimization report for the month of August. After an automatic review of your sites, we think you might be able to improve your monetization using the following tips:

Referrals can add incremental revenue to your site.
You are not currently using Referrals on your sites.

We hope these tips are helpful, and encourage you to experiment using different layouts and formats — no two sites monetize the same way!

So Google wants me to use its less than stellar referral program. It calls this optimization. I believe it to be a joke.
