Quick Tip: Installing Software Windows Server 2003 R2

How about a quick tip for the network admin? Say you have a farm of windows 2003 servers. You need to install your KVM software on the servers. This is to provide emergency connection in case a server goe haywire. After all you don’t want to drive to the datacenter every time you need to admin the server.

Here is the TIP, Windows 2003 has a great feature called DEP(Data Execution Prevention). All DEP does is prevent programs from running to protect you from yourself. In my example installing the KVM software required a setup file to be added to DEP. Thats all it took to allow the program to run. If you ever need to install a program and it doesnt work. This may be the cause. How do you get to the DEP? Right click on My Computer >Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>DEP

Here is a Screenshot to help.
