Refurb iPhones on Sale

I note from El Reg that Apple is now selling refurbished iPhones.

I know there are several reasons why one might sell a unit as a refurb, but my first suspicion is always “what was wrong with it?” and my second thought is “how bad must they be to already have refurbs on offer?”

Or am I just too cynical?
