To e-Crime or Not?

[tags]eCrime, e-Crime, government, residents, porn[/tags]

I like The Register as they can always be trusted to enliven what can be seen as a dull subject matter but even they have their moments of seriousness. One such from yesterday is their reporting on Australia’s war on internet porn.

The one phrase that jumped out at me was “Countering this is the argument that parents should not expect the State to do their parenting for them if they are unwilling to“. There’s nothing particularily novel in it, but literally only minutes before I’d been trawlling the BBC website and had come across this article. The one line from this article that summed it up was: The report criticised the government’s current “Wild West” approach of leaving internet security up to the individual as “inefficient and unrealistic”
So, iIn one country we have the Government doing more but not totally welcome by its residents and in the other we have the residents demanding more but the Government not doing enough.

It’s a funny world we live in but I confess to loving it.

Parenting is a big responsibility. A child is a blank slate - they become what you make them. Unfortunately some parents are not up to the job. These are the types that pass the buck to anyone other than themselves. Responsible parents can cope with the educating/policing issue. Yes you need both.

How often have you heard ‘It’s not my fault, he won’t do what he is told’ argument? If they tried harder in the early years the child would not be the little **** it is today. Taking the easy route only makes it harder for parent and child later in life.

In an ideal world you do not need the Big Brother approach as the parents already undertake the required roll. Unfortunately these days Big Brother imposes laws/restrictions to cater for the less capable (idiots) in society rather than educate them.

The end result - The majority have to suffer the restrictions imposed to cater for the minority of morons.

So, bad parents want others to do the policing for them. The rest of society will eventually suffer as Big Brother slowly adds more and more restrictions until today’s internet becomes ‘The Good Old Days’.

Paul - I am with you on this one and totally against this nanny state we are developing in the UK.

What Do You Think?
