ShadowMyth’s Babblings: The Job, the Guy, and Moving

ShadowMyth’s Been MIA
Some of you may have noticed I have not been blogging as much lately. I have been busy working my remodeling job, and trying to fit everything else in there too. It wouldn’t be so bad, but I have not done this kind of work on a regular basis, in quite awhile. I am starting to get in the loop again, but am still pretty tired when I get home.

The Job
This particular job we are on, has been rather an annoyance for me. We are working on an old house, that we have found evidence to suggest, was built in the 30’s. The owner, has owned the house for fifteen years, and has rented it out as two separate units, for quite some time now. He does not know it, but he is a slum lord.

He wants us to do this slap it together, Mickey Mouse deal, and make an illusionary appearance of good to go. For fifteen years, he has done all of the maintenance himself. I, as the painter on the job, was given the task of prepping, and painting all of the trim.

The owner tells me to sand off any flaking lose paint, sand out any drips, and putty any holes. Layers of anciest paint were piled over one another, ancient drips, that had only grown bigger with time. Beneath it all…a nightmare. First there was the lead paint, which I have inhaled and worn for about 4 days total. Well, I mean I had showers in between, but all day, I have been covered in this crap. I have this mental thing about things clinging tightly to my body, like air masks, so I suffer with it. It is a good thing I take things to deal with such toxins.

Then, there was the wood underneath the paint…decaying, rotting away in places, and dried out beyond measure. Now I had to become Michaelangelo with putty. I didn’t do a half bad job, if I say so myself. I got the primer down on some of it today, and it was almost passable as decent. I was embarrassed, but it was what I was paid to do.

The Guy
When I left the house today, I had the odd thought, I might meet a guy at work today. This was something I knew had no basis to it, as there were not going to be any other tradesmen out today, as far as I knew. It was toward the end of the day, and I was beginning to look my usual ‘end of the day’ ragged, when a painter arrived.

Fire, my partner, was introducing myself and my son Robin, to the painter. I had that embarrassed feeling, the kind you get when you know you are attracted to someone. The painter was dressed in his trashed beyond hell painter clothes, and wearing way too much cologne. He was shorter than me, and not really my type, but I was having a full blown chemical reaction to this man. I was thinking to myself, “Oh no, Fire is going to introduce me as his ‘wife’ “, and sure enough, he did.

Fire and I have been separated for over four years now, but have just never bothered with the paperwork of divorce. The moment I got him alone, I told him to quit with the wife thing. He apologized, and asked if I had a thing for the painter. I couldn’t admit to it, and told him no. Good thing he doesn’t read my blog. He said if I did, he would go set him straight. I was horrified, I didn’t even want to imagine what he would say to the painter.

The rest of the day I just went about what needed to be done, and tried to keep my hormones under control. I didn’t talk to him again, as I just really had no clue what I would say. I have no idea if the guy is even single, but my body seemed to tell me he was a decent match. Well, he is going to be on the job this week, so who knows what will happen. I won’t hold my breath though. In the meantime, I am still looking.

Moving
Did I mention I am in the middle of moving too? I have until the 31st to get the house packed and deep cleaned. Oh, and there is the matter of finding a 4-5 bedroom house, or a house with mother-in- law, at the right price. I am sure it will all come together, but it is all keeping me very busy. I stayed up till 12:30 this morning, just so I had time to do my qi gong.

With all of this activity, I have been rethinking how I have been going about things. Though it will take up more of my time, I have another project. This one, is to get all of my life into a manageable form. I started by having Sky today, pack up almost al of the dishes, leaving only what we absolutely need. One plate, bowl, and glass, for every person. This is not for the sake of moving, but because I am tired of coming home to piles of dishes.

I decided to really focus on what is important, and cut out anything that is getting in the way of my heading forward at a decent pace. One of these things, is my bookmarks. I have over 1500 of them in my Firefox, and though they are organized, they are still something to trip over in my research work.

I am going to go through every category, and pick out the 4 most useful links for each one. I will be having a series on this called ‘ShadowMyth’s Bookmarks’, if you are are interested in finding out what resources I have discovered over the years. I will post which ones I let go of, and the remainder that I chose to keep. In truth, a large portion of these bookmarks I have never thoroughly explored, or only used once. I will be investigating and learning about all of these sites, so it will be an all around adventure!

Well, off I go to do my qi gong and meditation. Have a wonderful evening everyone!

I have been too - funny isn’t it? The instant the blog starts picking up traction and bringing in nice change, I have to run away. :) But that’s the slow season… I work twice as hard for less than half the money (which is why, when I’m not sick, I usually make enough in April to cover the summer.)

Good luck with the full plate. :)

Thanks! Sounds like things are going well for you. I hope to make something of an income from my writing one of these days, so I no longer have to do remodeling. Things are indeed coming together for me though, and I hope to be making decent money within the year. Good to hear from you!
