ShadowMyth’s Archives: Cute, Real Cute…

This piece was written about 7 years ago, on one of the many Yahoo groups I used to run.
Cute. By dictionary interpretation we find cute means “sharp”, by society definition, we see the Easter bunny and cabbage patch dolls. I remember as a child my mother would tell my father he looked “sharp”, and he certainly was not “cute” if you get my drift.
In Japan they call cute ‘Kawaii’, and trust me, they really know the depth of what we now have come to call cute. Cute is wrongness. I know in this day and age this sounds very opinionated, but the fact is, I am.
Cute is the bitterness and beauty of life sugarcoated into something I cannot stomach, it is way too sweet. Cute is something so sweet it becomes a thing of disgust, of weakness and illness. Can you imagine a candy-coated world, a world where everything is ‘cute’? The horror of it is enough to make me want to burn Disney movies, and deface every sappy faced doll in the world.
Now, what is REALLY scary, is that people are always telling me I am “cute”. I am a 34 year old woman, I do not want to look cute…I want to look sexy, alluring, sophisticated, smart, charismatic…NOT CUTE! Uh, am I getting carried away?
If you can imagine last week I was standing in a grocery store line for 10 minutes, listening to the register lady gush about how CUTE I am! I thought she was going to come over and pinch my cheek, and then the bagger jumped on the bandwagon.
I post porn pics of myself on the web, and guys write me and tell me I am cute! Imagine I am tied up and gagged, and they think I look cute!
The poor computer keys, they get so abused when I get to these points in my writing. I am sorry my little square friends, I will be kinder! Anyway, this cute thing is just a curse.
My children I have raised to be people…not ‘children’. They go to the grocery store and buy themselves treats, things like loaves of specialty breads and such. Anyway, they are paying for their merchandise, and these people are all goggling over them like they are little tiny creatures. They say things like “This is yours? Oh how cute, your buying it yourself!” or “Oh, what a good girl, you’re bagging the groceries! That is so cute!”.
Now picture if you will my son and daughter, who are 11 & 12, are standing there looking at these people like they must be idiots. Why are they cute? Are you cute for buying groceries? I think not, it is a pretty normal thing to buy groceries. What, are children so set apart from reality anymore, that if they do something real, it is cute??
Obviously from what I am gathering here, cute is something set apart from that which is real. Cute is the unrealistic desire to make something above it’s realness, separate from it’s true self. I dress in all black most of the time, wear a collar, and dress like a slut. I have a black widow tattoo and sometimes I wear knives at my side….and I am cute?
I believe the term is meant to make me separate from that which is the truth of myself, an easier way to swallow the medicine so to speak. What other reason is there for cute? I can see within nature beauty, innocence/ignorance, adorable, pretty, content, comical, but never cute.
Cute/kawaii does not exist within nature, why would She need it? I have noticed that cute becomes an important factor in the lives of many women as they age. Could it be that this is a sign of growing dissatisfaction within their lives, as they grow older? Sometimes when life has given us a lot of what we cannot accept, we try to sugar coat it, and make it easier to deal with.
When people call me cute, I envision that I am sharp…my senses are a-cute. In the meantime, I threaten my children with being locked in a room, tied to a chair, and forced to watch Disney movies for days on end. They respond by saying: “Real cute mom…real cute!”
