Dreaming 101: Recurring Dreams

Recurring dreams are quite common; almost everyone has had a dream series they have had off an on over the years. Most often these kind of dreams are rooted in early childhood events, undealt with issues, or life altering circumstances.

These kind of dreams are like a record of our evolution in certain areas of our lives. For example, quite a few people have recurring dreams involving falling. Falling is a symbol of losing control, or letting go to circumstances.

In my personal falling dreams, I am almost aways going over a vast body of water, and plummeting down a huge waterfall. This would indicate I am dealing with emotional risks, that leave me feeling overwhelmed and out of control.

As the years went on, this dream finally came to an evolutionary point of resolution. In my last falling dream, as I was going over the side, I opened myself fully to the experience, and embraced it. I have not had a repeat of this dream since. As I evolved, so did my dream, and eventually this theme was no longer needed…I had outgrown it.

This last week I had one of my most predominant recurring dreams, the one I call The Haunted House. In this dream I am usually visiting this old abandoned haunted house, sometimes I am moving into it. The first floor of the house is never haunted, but the second floor is. Sometimes there are more than two floors, and the entirety of the upstairs floors, are filled with paranormal phenomena.

The building in this dream represents structures in my life, and those issues/situations that haunt me. In the first evolution of this dream, the buildings are in great decay, and a hazard to be in. I was at first very afraid of the spirits and phenomena occurring in the house, and did not want to stick around.

In the second evolution of this dream, I begin to make acquaintance with these entities, and to learn more about them. This continued in it’s process, until this last week, when I came to another point of evolution. In this last dream, I had about ten visitors come and visit me, in my home. This time, the haunted house is my home.

After my guests had enjoyed themselves in conversation and such, I invited them upstairs to see the haunted second floor. About three people declined, but the rest accompanied me up the stairs. Upon arriving, I feel a very powerful psychic energy, and I warn my guests not to panic. About 3 of them do, and run back down the stairs.

I walk down the hallway, and greet the spirit of a young girl, who is about 3 or 4 years old. I bend down and give her a big hug, and tell her how happy I am to see her. At this point, I have lost a couple more guests, who also head downstairs. I greet another spirit, and venture around the rest of the second floor area. Things are moving about on their own, and there is a variety of paranormal phenomenon occurring. The remainder couple of guests and I continue to explore.

Now, it is obvious that a great transformation has occurred here. The dream indicates I am now at home with the ghosts of my past, and am even able to embrace them in acceptance. No longer do I have to fear or worry about those things from my past haunting me…I have befriended these situations.

If we can understand consciously what these dreams are telling us, we can also work consciously toward resolving the issues that are creating them. In the process of doing so, your sleeping dreams will evolve and change. This kind of dream work can be very fulfilling, and bring about positive change in your life.

What kind of themes have you had in your recurring dreams?

I, like everyone out there have experienced the “falling dream” in my case I have began to experience them in different ways. The first few times I have had them I would wake up in a panic breathing heavily. However, whenever these dreams would repeat I would stick around as long as I can, either ends in me getting saved from hitting the ground by something or just plain not remembering how it ends. I have accepted these dreams to mean hang in there help is on the way and dont give up…

I have also had these recurring dreams of me just going up into the air and flying uncontrollably. I’m pretty sure they are along the same lines of the “falling dreams” i have, but going in the opposite direction. Like falling, when I would begin to start flying I would lose my breath but in this instance it does not bring on a panic, it is more of a outstanding view of the world below me and can not believe what I am seeing with my eyes. The past couple dreams I have had in this series I have been able to gain control of my flight and explore a bit and not lose as much of my breath in the process. I have not been able to gain complete control of my flying yet but I am excited to do so. I have interpreted this dream to pertain to my life in general. I am in my 20’s now and am realizing that my life is not as controlled as it has been in my younger years and that I am in control of my own life and can take it anywhere i would like :)

…. i am open to suggestions about interpretation.

Adam,
Almost everyone who experiences the falling dream, never actually hits the ground, or remembers hitting the ground. It has been theorized, that this is the subconscious protecting one’s self from such realities, by omitting such content.
Your flying dreams are very similar to my own. Ever since I was a child, I al;so had these dreams. Flying is a very common theme actually, and it has made some wonder if maybe people really once did fly.
In part of my flying dream evolution, I could only fly low to the ground, and could not maintain it for long periods of time. Flying is considered to be symbolic of the freedom you feel in your life, and your ability to let go to this freedom. In your case, you felt inhibited to some degree and not quite sure of yourself in the world. As time went on though, you felt more confident in yourself, and you could allow yourself to let go to your inner freedom, which ultimately does bring personal control. In my case, I was under very constrictive circumstances, and had very little freedom in my life. As I broke these chains of personal imprisonment, I was able to fly high above the ground, and reclaim my personal power/freedom.
Thanks for stopping by!

In response to your dream titled “The Haunted House”, I must respond as a shaman who is learned in the messages within dreams. You missed something very important in your interpretation. When you interpret the house as representing “structures in my life”, you must acknowledge not only some things but *everything* in that house as being part of the self, including the people who are within it during the dream.

Let’s start at the beginning. You are having a recurring dream. A recurring dream is a message either from your Higher Self or from the Spirits/Higher Powers that there is something that needs to be paid attention to. In your dreams you visit a house; sometimes you move into it. In either case you accept this house as your “state of being” - your physical situation or your spiritual path in life. Either way, you are grounding yourself there, as represented by the first floor of the house which you choose to occupy as your personal space and it is never haunted.

You recall “in the second evolution of this dream, I begin to make acquaintance with these entities, and to learn more about them. This continued in its process, until this last week, when I came to another point of evolution. In this last dream, I had about ten visitors come and visit me, in my home. This time, the haunted house is my home.” You probably know that stairs leading upward can represent ascending or aspiring goals, or access to higher levels of consciousness. The “ghosts” represent aspects of your life which “haunt” you or are unsettling in some way. When you invite the “guests” to the second floor to experience these “ghosts”, and some of these “guests” flee at different stages of approaching these “ghosts”, the recurring dream is showing you that you are losing parts of yourself/your energy as a result of whatever it is causing these dreams.

It is my opinion that this series of dreams is trying to tell you that something in your life is wrong, and that you need to discover what this is and change it before you sacrifice too much of yourself to it.

How humble you are to assume so much about a dream that isn’t yours. I have studied dreams now for twenty years, and one thing I do know, is that dreams reflect whatever interpretation system you are personally using. I was only interpreting the dream partially, as I was trying to just give an example. The full interpretation for this dream is several pages long, as recorded in my dream journal. Yes, it is true that different people in the dream reflect yourself, but there are others in dreams beyond yourself. Well, unless you are extremely narcissistic. The little ghost girl was my molested abused self as a child, and the others were different sides of me from my past. I have spent 25 years working through my issues, and I am sure I still have some left, most people do. I however have worked toward integration for many years, and am finally at a point in my self I feel quite centered, happy, and content. Your attitude is very egotistical for a shaman, usually that is the first thing one needs to let go of. It appears though you were just trying to advertise yourself on my page, as you never even listed your name.

For quite a few weeks now i’ve been having dreams that i could fly.

I would initiate flying by jumping, but i flew only a few feet over the ground and VERY uncontrollably. When i was younger i used to dream quite often that i could fly, but i would fly high and i had complete control.

For the past year i’ve been in a relationship that is completely different from what i’m used to. as a high school student i’m not used to committment and boundaries, and my boyfriend has quite a few rules that i’m not supposed to break. I think this may have somethign to do with my dream. I’ve lost a lot of confidence since i began dating him. and in my dreams i often find that i dont embrace flying high, i’d much rather be close to the ground where i’m safe. Two flying dreams ago i flew very far up but only to show my little brother and to save my mom.

I’m not really sure what to make of the dreams.

for the past month i’ve been haunted every night with nightmares that i wake from in a panic.

If you could possibly tell me what you think may be the case (i partial analysis is all i need, since you dont have the specifics and i’m sure i can figure those out by myself). I’m rather distressed about it though, and a professional’s opinion would help me a lot.

I used to wish i could fly to escape my problems when i was younger. everytime my parents would fight or something went wrong during my traumatic childhood, i would imagine i could fly away to the moon and the stars and look over the city in the complete quite.

But now i cant escape my problems by flying away…

could that have something to do with it?

Being a teenager is rather stressful, i will admit. :]

Thank you!

(Sorry for the spelling errors. :] )

Kenzie,
Flying dreams do indeed represent personal freedom, and confidence in yourself, greatly affects your ability to fly. I also have had flying dreams throughout my life, and went through a period, where it was difficult for me to get off the ground, or stay up for long periods of time.
Constricting relationships definitely can have an impact on your ability to fly. It could be that you are not really ready for such a commitment, and just need some more time to learn about you and explore life unfettered. I myself have been there in a relationship, and it really can squelch your inner confidence and personal joy.
Unfortunately, a lot of relationships are like your own, because it is animal instinct for makes to keep their females close, and not available for courtship with other males,.
Though this is to insure his paternity in nature, human males have no clue why they are acting this way.
If the females are ready to mate, they release a chemical into their system, that makes them desire to settle down, and she isn’t too unhappy about her mate being overly territorial. It sounds like you may not have come to this point in yourself, or maybe your body isn’t wanting that with this person.
Suddenly occurring nightmares can occur for a few reasons. If there is something in your past that was troubling, and it resurfaces, this can cause nightmares. If you are in a situation that you are experiencing as *nightmarish*, then it will reflect directly into your dreams, as nightmares.
You have not really stated what these nightmares are, and therefore I assume they must be private. I would suggest that you read this article on dream interpretation, and listen to your own intuition. I am pretty sure that if you honestly allow yourself to see the symbols before you, you will be quite clear as to their meaning.

Once you understand what the dreams are telling you, you can then go about making conscious choices. Your dreams reflect your world, you hold all of the keys.
Dream true!

Recurring dream:
Just last night I had a dream about driving a car. It was dark, nobody on the road…when all of a sudden I cross over and drive on the lane where cars would come in the opposite direction. I then return to the “right” lane.

I had similar dreams in the past where I drive against incoming traffic or I drive backwards (in rear gear) but in the correct direction.
I don’t always see cars and I never suffer any damages, but I do feel the risky situation.

Does anybody feel confident about the meaning? Thank you

I would say that you sometimes step outside the boundaries of your established life rules, and though you do not stay there, you fear things going wrong. Driving backwards of course is going against the flow, and applies in a similar way. I would say you are at times experiencing inner turmoil, and the desire to break out of your confined reality.
There will always be boundaries, but you need to consciously choose them. Most people are in their set boundaries because of the viewpoints of their families and the society around them, not because they really believe in what they do. It takes questioning thoroughly and looking at something with a critical eye, to really believe in something. Something must make sense to believe in it. Perhaps you need to look over your own life set of rules, and see if they have foundation. In that way you could free yourself from unneeded restraints you feel are currently necessary.

I think you know, deep inside, that the shaman is right.

What Do You Think?
