Firefox Bookmark Toolbar… Not Enough Space?

Since I have started blogging, I have had a greater need for space on my bookmark toolbar. I have it set up to only use icons, rather than words. I discovered this cool little trick when using Microfirefox as my browser’s skin. I have no clue why this works with this skin, but it does for me. Even with only icons, I now was seriously out of space. Yes, I could click down on the side, and see the rest of them, but it was getting annoying.
I did a search project, trying to find some kind of extension that would give me another bookmark bar. There was none that I could find, and I decided to do a Google search on the subject. I found this article, which pointed out something I had obviously neglected looking into.
If you right click on the bookmark toolbar, there is an option to create a folder. I went about creating folders for the various subject matter the bookmarks fell into, and dragged the bookmarks into where they each belonged. Each folder now appeared on the toolbar, as nothing more than an arrow. I clicked on one of the arrows, and down came the bookmarks.
Now this was all fine and dandy, but there was still one glitch. Not every site has it’s own favicon, and in Firefox, sites without them have nothing more than a ring to symbolize them. If you hover your mouse over your toolbar, the favicon can be identified for what it is via a balloon. Now however, the balloon tips did not work in the pop down folder. So, I have made space on my bar, but now I cannot tell where the heck some of these bookmarks come from. I just have to play Russian roulette, and hope I end up where I want to be.
The article in the above link, also mentioned an extension called Smart Bookmarks Bar, which is supposed to enable you to eliminate words, and only use favicons. I discovered another such extension, called toolbarmode, and decided to download it. This way I can change my theme as I so desire, and still only use the favicons. It is possible to also just bring up the properties of the bookmark, and eliminate any text. Whatever the case may be, eliminating words from the bookmark toolbar will greatly increase the space you have available.
If anyone out there has a solution to my issue, and knows of an extension, or a way to add another bookmark toolbar…I would greatly appreciate it!

What if you put a favicon on the sites that don’t have favicons?
I use the Favicon Picker 2, and I can then assign favicons to anything on my bookmarks, including the toolbar. You just can’t assign favicons to folders, which rather sucks.
And yes, I’d love to have a second bookmark toolbar too.

I knew there was something out there like that, thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Hopefully someone over at Mozilla is listening, maybe we’ll get a second bookmark bar…

I use All-in -One Sidebar as well as my bookmark toolbar. I keep my major bookmarks on the bar (which I have customized with Back[using Fitt’s Back Button], forward, stop, reload, backup [vie FEBE], translate, and options on the left side of the toolbar). I have my bookmarks set to open in the sidebar, and have a button for them at the top of the sidebar.
I also use the sidebar for about everything else as well. I have buttons for my downloads, new tab, CookieCuller, my extensions, Wikipedia, add bookmark, manage bookmarks, Firebug, and Find on my sidebar.
I also use Tiny Menu to put all my menu items (File, Edit, etc.) in a drop down menu. That way I have my address bar search bar, Paste and God button, Customize Toolbar button, and Smiley Xtra 4 button on my main toolbar as well.
I like a tight ship, and Firefox let’s me pack it all in a small space.

Nice Trotter. I was using Tiny Menu before I found Personal Menu and i love it as it lets you totally customize and even remove the options you don’t use! Very powerful.
I used to have all my bookmarks in Firefox but I was better at finding the site using Google than my own bookmarks. :-) So I just tag it and dump it in Mister Wong (cool alternative for del.icio.us) and just keep the ones I opened daily in Firefox.

Basaint1,
Good luck in your searches, but be sure not to try the oxymoronical thing listed in the above comment. It didn’t work properly for me, and messed with other extensions. It may not for others, but I really do not recommend it. Thanks for stoppin’ by!

Hi Crix,
Most of these kind of features are added through extensions, which usually are made by individuals, rather then Mozilla. So, somehow we have to bribe one of the programmers!

i think we need to post there http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=19 who knows if ext. devs are aware of this. It’s strange that no one has done that kind of ext. yet, that makes me wonder if adding another bookmark line is easy or even if it’s supported. (i dont think that ext. programming will allow to “play” with all firefox features for safety).

Well, according to the guy who posted the oxymoronical link above, it is possible. However that program didn’t work for me. There are quite a number of things Firefox needs I have found no extension for, I suppose it is just a matter of time though. I should post it over on the forums, but I am always so busy! Thanks Crix!

For a while prior to FF2.0 , I had an extension called “Second Bookmarks”, it was made useless by the upgrade and has never been updated itself AND I have never been able to find it again, although I think it was originally on mozdev.org. Point being someone has at some point made one, if you’re out there, update it !!!

I just switched from Camino on the Mac to Firefox for the Mac.
The second or extended bookmark toolbar was one of the first things I missed on firefox. On camino, the toolbar just gets a bit wider as you add URL’s and you get a second and third line in one bookmark toolbar that just gets wider to accomodate the second and third line.
Much better than what firefox does with the extra URLs hanging off the end.
The funny thing is that Camino is part of the Mozilla project as well - I guess those guys never talk to each other or see what the other guy is doing

in the new firefox…simply deleting the bookmark name from {properties} defualts to just the favicon of the site. saving a LOT of space on the toolbar.
