Living The Good Life 101: Work Less

  • No Related Post

Most people do not know how our economy works, and what it is dependent upon. If they did know, they might ponder their part within it a little more deeply. Economic growth requires only a few base factors, aside from acts of nature and such. First it requires people to create a product, and second for people to buy it. If the product decreases in the numbers it is sold, the price goes up to offset the company’s perceived losses. Let us imagine all of our appliances being top of the line, industrial quality, with a life span capacity of 25 years on average. The question arises….who would be buying blenders and dishwashers? Almost no one. So, the corporations figured out they needed to make the product have a shorter lifespan, and downgraded the materials. These low grade product lines are actually manufactured specifically for stores like Wal-Mart. The middle classes of course have their product line which is a little better, and the rich get the cream of the crop. Now, to be able to make this picture work, there must be plenty of people to work in the factories. Most of these factory jobs pay minimum wage, in a high risk environment, and have poor working conditions. They do not provide health care or benefits, and work their worker up to 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week. These are American factories. Because there are so many mass production jobs, including in the agricultural industry, our government has shipped people over from all over the world…to do the jobs most Americans do not want to do. Now there are more people to buy the crappy blenders that die in 6 months. More people make more stuff, that more people buy, to make the rich think they are gazillionaires. We just keep buying crap, eating up the world’s resources to feed the insatiable lust of the almighty rich. Now, if we all did have those awesome blenders and appliances made to last….how much work would there not be to do? What if we actually used the incredible technologies already in existence to fuel our world? Many of these technologies require little energy on the part of bipeds once they are initially in place. Every aspect of our lives can be simplified by available technologies now in existence today. Work would be to some degree limited to initial manufacture, and maintenance. Maintenance centers could be created in every community, whereby whatever we own can be taken in for parts and repair. Because we no longer would need to buy as much, we would only have to work an average of 3-4 days a week, to maintain the reality around us.

Imagine for a moment never having to stress over money again. Everything you need is made available to you, and all you have to do is work 3-4 days a week. The rest of your time is yours to do as you please. In fact, that time could be concentrated, and converted into base hours….allowing you to perhaps have a several month vacation every year. Would this be worth letting money go? Materialism to the degree we have gone, is killing us as a nation, and as a world…we need to let go of it. If everyone, and I do mean everyone, donated their time to making this reality work…we would own our own lives and be free of this imperialistic rule. We could all donate our time to run the power stations, teach the children, grow the food, and repair the vehicles that we have converted to healthy fuels. There would no longer be such a thing as retirement, because not working makes you old! It creates health care issues, and makes for more work to be done! If everyone worked until they died, at least they would die with honor, and a personal pride in themselves, rather than slobbering all over their care taker while they get their diaper changed. Accountability. Responsibility. This is what is required of a free people. An enslaved people live to serve their master, not their own desires. I personally desire a healthy, clean world, free of the pollution being pumped out in the name of corporate interests, and dished out like slop on a tin plate to the masses that create it. There are alternatives…on every level. Every one of our problems can be solved. Now. Today. The answers are already in place, we need only to take action.

“Here Come the 70’s” (TV show) proposed just such a world, yet here we are, working longer hours to support our ever growing “needs”. The world’s run by governments/corporations who dictate the way we’re to live from the day we’re born via our thoroughly conditioned parents/teachers, books and the media. Their collective voice has most of the world believing that no matter how injust human life is on this planet, we’re living the “one right way”. Read the Ishmael trilogy by Daniel Quinn. Once you get your mind around it you won’t be surprised by the state of the world, nor will you expect a great change any time soon (at least I don’t - draw your own conclusions).

There’s a lot of behavioral intertia in the world and little force to counter it. It pays to be religious and believe in an after-life (lowers your expectations of the here-and-now while assuring you of a wondrous ever-after). Yet it’s religious beliefs such as the concept of man’s right to use the earth as he pleases (a global eminent domain for man by God), or the need for un-checked procreation (right-to-lifers), increase this behavioral intertia by creating ever more consumers. Want to be an environmentalist? Don’t breed! Now there’s “action”.

Yes, I agree with you for the most part tseax, but I disagree with you on our capacity to make such change a reality. Change is already greatly in the works, because this monstrosity of a system is beginning to crash. As the process of it’s disintegration continues, people are going to be looking for answers. There are a lot of answers out there to be had that actually work, but we who see what is going on, need to put these ideas into the mind’s of the public now. As the system crumbles, new ways will take it’s place, unless we wait for the tyrants to do it for us. People need to know there are alternatives, so at the time of choosing, they will have more options.
