Radio Broadcast Day Of Silence

  • No Related Post

When I went to log into my live365 account today, I was greeted with a message informing me that today was a Radio Broadcast Day of Silence. For those of you unaware of the issues that brought about this day, be sure to visit THIS page, and get informed. If you enjoy online music, you may not be in the near future… unless action is taken NOW.

Enough said. Protect your freedom!

I think that I need more information on this issue. Why the objection to providing monies to the musicians? I am a reformed Napster-user (from back in the 90’s when I didn’t know any better). I have no problem with paying fees to hear good music.
What is Yahoo doing with the money that I pay for my music-unlimited-to-go? It doesn’t appear to be going towards making my jukebox Vista-combatible…why not give more money to the artists?
I love Internet Radio and would hate to ever see it go away - but I am hesistant to call my Senator on this one.

There are a lot of small, one-shot stations that I listen to online since, well, they’re only online.
Just from listening to one station (RadioNigel) I think that I found about 10 bands that I’d either never heard before or hadn’t heard enough of to decide whether I wanted to buy their albums.
So I spent money on CDs (NOT Torrenting them!) and gave the labels some money (well technically the store, but y’know what I mean), so why are the labels, that will be getting these extra fees not artists, punishing online radio and indirectly their own potential sales?

It would be better if the money did go to the artists. This is the RIAA that has lobbied the changes through. SIRIUS and XM will NOT be paying the same money that the online broadcasters do. Radio stations do not either. This is a cost to only the On-Air broadcasters (including radio stations that do Internet broadcasting).

The radio stations would just shut down those streams but the Internet only stations pay a fee each year and a 12% of revenue at this time. As of July 15 the new cost for 2006 and 2007 are payable IMMEDIATELY and at double the price. In 2008 it is equal to 300% of what they pay today.

In any other industry that is ROBBERY!

Has basic information on the rate structure. It also has analysis comparing income and per play fees for various sized internet radio stations. Mind you, this fee is over and above the ASCAP/BMI fees the broadcasters are happily paying the song’s composer & writer. The bills before Congress match the internet radio fees to those paid by satellite radio.

I really wish I had never published this thing. I will leave it up though as a testament to my mistakes, a person shouldn’t try to hide what has already openly been. See Ron Schenone’s page and my reply if you are interested in my retraction.
