Someone, somewhere, is slagging your company off right now in cyberspace. You need to know about this. Perhaps there was a time, not too long ago, when all that newfangled stuff about the internet could have been left happily to the geeks and obsessives who spend their lives online.
Not any more. The emergence of so-called “social media” - web logs (or blogs), chat-rooms, “community” sites such as CraigsList, MySpace and Bebo - has thrust millions of new voices out into the world. The numbers are growing all the time, but some estimates suggest there are already as many as 20m blogs worldwide, with 75,000 being started up every day. Blogs are updated thousands of times an hour, with a quarter of a million new postings being written every day.
It is unlikely that many marketing directors will have time to surf the internet, even if they knew where to look, on the hunt for all these forceful customer voices.
