Microsoft’s Origami Gadget May Cause Search Engine Havoc

No, I just don’t think this is the case. While the Origami project is certainly the hip thing going around right now, most of it is likely to be hype and therefore die out after a time I believe. Just be patient, you’ll see.

Microsoft’s choice of the name Origami for their new laptop/gadget may wipe popular hobby/craft sites off the search engines. I was reading buzz about the new product, when I started to ponder the impact upon the existing websites about the craft/hobby - Origami, and their placement in search engines. Pages about the hobby of folding paper may soon be replaced by pages about a handheld/laptop hybrid made by Microsoft.

Right now Google is still showing results about the hobby in the top 3 spots. However, I am showing one of the “Google Suggestions” boxes on the front page which shows results from a search for “Microsoft Origami”. So Google’s algorithim is somehow aware that lots of people are searching for something they aren’t finding. A CNET article about the MS Origami is result #21 when searching for “Origami”.

I think the fact that Google puts a lot of weight into the age of links is keeping Origami-hobby-oriented sites at the top. But that’s just a temporary band-aid. Soon the sites about Microsoft’s Origami will have far more links than craft sites. Try an MSN.com search for “Oragami” and a technorati tag about the Microsoft product is the third result. As far as I know, MSN doesn’t have a similar link-aging aspect to their algorithim. Source: Sharp SEO
