S.O.S. my geekness has reached its limits… need help!

Ok so heres the problem. I’m fixing my girlfriend’s computer because her cd/dvd drive won’t read any disc what so ever. It states that the drive is present and working properly. I’ve already done some minor registry edits thinking that might be the problem, I removed both the upper and the lower filters on the drive and rebooted. yet it still spits perfectly good cd/dvd back out at me. I’m at a loss, should I just be a good girlfriend and replace the current drive with a new one? or should I just try to work through the problem? Because either way I’m gonna need some help from my fellow geeks. so if you could please drop me a comment on what the more logical thing to do would be that would be awesome. thanx for listening guys.

Hello,

A few things you can check or try, in no particular order:

Delete the DVD-ROM drive and ATA controllers from the Device Manager, reboot and let Microsoft Windows redetect them.

Verify the drive is jumpered properly.

Replace the 40-pin ATA data cable.

Test the DVD-ROM drive’s ability to read: A manufactured CD-ROM, a recorded CD±R, a manufactured DVD-ROM, a manufactured video DVD and a recorded DVD±R.

Try accessing the DVD-ROM drive after logging in with different credentials.

Try accessing the DVD-ROM drive in Safe Mode.

Clean the DVD-ROM drive using a lens cleaning kit.

Lastly, try installing the DVD-ROM in a different computer and see if the problem persists and swapping a known-to-be-good DVD-ROM disc drive into the computer. If the problem follows the DVD-ROM drive then it probably needs to be replaced.

From my experience, you’d be better off just replacing the drive. Your time is money and drives are cheap. I’ve had drives ramp up and down the speed and still not find any disk. Usually solved the problem with a new drive.
