What Ubuntu Should Put in Intractable Igloo

Over at Tux Geek, there’s an interesting post containing suggestions for the next version of Ubuntu.  I don’t necessarily agree with them but it’s always nice to read what other people think.  It’s worth checking out.
Being completely, almost genetically unable to let things be, I felt it necessary to contribute my own

Maybe this is the problem with Linux…

I download the linux program in the archived format *.tar.gz.
Extract the file to a folder.
Run ./configure
At some point, it checks to see if the build is SANE.
I think we’d all be better served if it would check to see if the builder is SANE.
maybe it’s just me…

Putting And End To Platform Lock-In

One thing I will never miss from my days in the PC repair business was having to explain to a client that their PC was no longer. The matter goes from bad to worse when there are concerns regarding the expense for people on a fixed income. It can be heart breaking when these individuals [...]

Do You Have A CrashPlan?

Previously, I spoke of providing a decent backup solution for new computer users who are making a new PC purchase. Well, after doing a little research, I found a solution that is not only cross platform, it is dead simple to use. It’s calledCrashPlan.
I first set up CrashPlan on my Ubuntu notebook. After extracting the [...]

How To Configure Wireless Internet In Linux

Attention: As of Ubuntu Heron this article is no longer an issue, you DO NOT need to blacklist rt2500usb any longer. Just plugin the rt73usb device, give it a few minutes for networkmanager to find it and go - that is it. But remember, its first use might take a bit for NM to see [...]

But now that software is becoming available for both platforms along with the benefit of extra RAM capacity, things are looking much brighter.
One of the [...]

Updates And More

Just wanted to give everyone the latest. As you may remember, I wrote an article about my discovery that apparently Ubuntu was being sold at Best Buy via Valuesoft. I had expressed concerns as to the legitimacy of this and decided to just by the CD myself. After all, it is currently be sold in [...]

Ubuntu At Best Buy?

Wow, this certainly surprised me. Today I found out that Ubuntu Linux is now being sold at Best Buy online and even at some stores. And normally I would say this is great, except there is a problem - what the heck is Ubuntu “complete” edition? To my knowledge, Canonical (owner of the copyrights and [...]

Linspire - It’s Been Fun Over The Years

Today I received news from a media contact of mine that Linspire has been purchased by Xandros, the company best known for Linux on the ASUS Eee. While this may be sad news for some, I do not think the ripples are going to be felt by anyone in the Linux community for a variety [...]

Is Apple Ripping You Off?

If you were to take the article seen here at face value, my article’s title may very well be the reader’s conclusion. Once you get past the rabid Mac fans who have made their perspective clear in the comments, there is finally one comment that actually sheds some light on what I think is the [...]

Kissing XP Goodbye

I don’t believe there is any question that here soon when you use Windows on a PC, it will be Vista. Despite begging and pleading with the Redmond giant, Microsoft has made their thoughts on the matter clear and now closed - there will be no reprieve, XP is a goner.
So this will mean a [...]

Three Hundred Dollar Dell Notebooks - Eee Killer?

Have to admit, despite the fact that I cannot seem to make Dell products appear at my door step for the life of me, this news of a Dell competitor to the ASUS Eee is rather compelling for what it is. And much like we have seen with the ASUS Eee, you will be able [...]

Java And Flash On Ubuntu Heron 64 bit Linux

Not too long back, I had a reader ask me whether or not it was worth it to try one of the Linux distributions released for 64bit architecture vs that of 32bit. I thought the question was rather timely, as I had recent purchased a new notebook from System76.com that happens to run Ubuntu 8.04 64bit [...]

OLPC vs Classmate PC

Never laid eyes on a Classmate PC in my life outside of the provided demos on the Intel website. This said, I have done fairly extensive testing on the Sugar OS used for OLPC computers. Based on what I have seen, there is no contest - the Classmate stomps the OLPC pc into dust with [...]

PC Hardware Audits

Windows or Linux, one thing I think is important regardless of OS is making sure that when a PC is being serviced, there is a solid hardware audit underway. On the Windows side of the fence, I found one program that I really liked. It is called WinAudit and man, it is slick.
Unlike other apps [...]

Turning The “This OS Is Better Than That OS” Argument On Its Head

As long as computer operating systems have been around, there have been zealots and advocates for each and every one of them. OS/2 anyone? This includes all platforms, big and small… I remember working for a large pharmaceutical company near Chicago immediately after college, where there were regular heated debates about the superiority of DEC’s [...]

Zonbu Challenges The Norm Yet Again

What is the driving force behind your household’s adoption of whichever OS you use? What do you like about it?

Fixing Miro On Ubuntu

I know that this latest Miro release has been pretty odd, being that it does not play well with sun-java6-plugin or sun-java5-plugin for some strange reason. It’s so bad as a matter of fact, that you actually are forced to remove Java completely, which is just plain silly. Here is how I fixed the problem [...]

Poor Community Advice Is No Substitute For Linux Documentation

It has long since been my own personal experience that Linux documentation is largely ignored by Linux beginners in exchange for the interactivity of Linux forums. The reasons why will be further explored in this piece; however, today I have located a solid exception to the rule. Not only does this article provide the clearest, [...]

Easing Into Linux, Or Just Looking Like It!

To each of you who have tried Linux and have found it to be a good match, congrats. But to those of you who simply cannot bring themselves over to that side of the fence due to Wi-Fi issues or a seeming lack of applications.
With this in mind, here are some resources that might be [...]

Community Vs. Corporate Linux

There is, in fact, a coming divide that will hit the Linux community like a freight train. The battle lines have already been drawn, and companies that support Linux, such as Canonical, will eventually find themselves fiercely pitted against companies like Linspire, that, only a short time ago, entered into an agreement of cooperation.
A clash [...]

Why Would Microsoft Want To Destroy Linux?

Everywhere I turn these days, I continue to hear how “Novell” sold Linux users down the river. And while I partially agree with this perspective, I do differ with those who say Xandros did the same thing. Xandros is simply looking to make sure that fluidity between the Linux desktop and Windows desktop is as [...]

Display Controls And Linux: Poor Combination

Let’s face it: some distributions have better controls for handling display issues than others. Two that do it right out of the box that come to mind include Fedora (Red Hat) and OpenSuSE (Novell). Each includes tools that minimize the need to do what I gleefully refer to as the “Xorg dance.” Basically, these options [...]

Who Do Dellbuntu? You Do?

Quote from DaniWeb.com (February 26, 2007):

Where’s The Competition Between Open & Closed Source?

Is there really the level of competition in the Open Source world that we see in the Closed Source world? This is something that has been stuck in my mind lately as I have been told so many times by Closed Source developers that by opening the code you are creating your own competition. Today, [...]

Linux Kernel In A Nutshell

Despite its large code base (more than seven million lines of code), the Linux kernel is the most flexible operating system that has ever been created. SuSE 10.2 – Will It Be Better Than 10.1?

I am a very happy Linux user, but am also aware that Linux is not for everyone. Having said this, I was a fan of SLED 10. So it’s not like I am anti-SuSE by any means.
When I heard that SuSE 10.2 had come out, naturally I was curious. Has it overcome some of the [...]

A Great Day For Linux Users!

In general, I do try to keep the level of news flowing within the Windows world. After all, most of the readers of this newsletter are indeed, reading it on Windows XP. But on the flip side, I have received email from Linux users (mostly Ubuntu/Kubuntu) that would like to see Linux related topics covered [...]

Updated eBay tools leave Linux users in the cold

This is a problem with regard to many software titles when it comes to the Linux world. It appears that Linux is no exception.
Online auction giant eBay is continually upgrading and supplementing its services, and that means frequent users periodically discover something new when they log in — integrated PayPal, new messaging tools, and so [...]

There is no Oracle Linux

Perhaps this will clear the air: there will be no Oracle Linux! Well, that seems to be the overall consensus, anyway.
Repeat after me: “There is no Oracle Linux.” I don’t care how many times you hear stock analysts say that Oracle is about to launch its own Linux. It’s just not going to happen.
The latest [...]

Are You Scared of Dual Booting Linux?

It’s an interesting vote to say the least. Personally, I am familiar enough with my partitions that I have not had any problems myself.
An excellent question it seems even when my personal experiences are put aside - a friend of mine over in Norway attempted to dual boot everyone’s favourite distro (Ubuntu) on his laptop [...]

The Evolving Windows Vs. Linux Battle

I have mixed feelings about the thoughts shared below. In some ways, I agree that Linux will be playing a bigger role in the future. Still, the software still could use a little spit and polish before we expect people to be dumping the alternative OS’ by the drove.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — There’s a [...]
