Do you have any advice for idiots like me who unthinkingly installed the porn4mac virus (or is it a trojan horse?). I use a Mac PowerBook G4, OSX version 10.3.9. I tried removing it with Mac Scan 2 and the DNSChanger Removal Tool, but it’s still there. Any suggestions?

Problem solved. The only indication that something was wrong was when I could not access one of my favorite sites, www.politico.com. Realizing to my dismay that I had installed porn4mac and possibly a fake QuickTime codec the evening before (after consuming one too many glasses of Merlot), I suspected the presence of a virus or trojan horse. After downloading MacScan 2.5.2 and the DNSChanger Removal Tool, I ran both programs, re-starting the computer each time. MacScan identified 33 tracking cookies and removed them, but found no other malware. The Removal Tool identified the DNSChanger trojan horse but was unable to remove it. After turning off the computer, re-starting it 12 hours later and running both programs again, MacScan again found no malware and the Removal Tool still detected the trojan horse. However, this time it was able to remove it. Keeping my fingers crossed, I revisited www.politico.com and had no difficulty accessing the site, so it seems my computer’s DNS settings are back to normal and it’s working fine once again. What a relief! Morals to this misadventure may be many, but two proverbs seem especially apt; “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (plus a ton of embarrassment)”….. and if you do visit risky sites, make sure you “Think with your head, not with your you-know-what.”
New questions: Why did the Removal Tool work this evening but not last night? Was MacScan updated during the day and do the two programs enable each other? The last time MacScan was updated was a month ago, on April 28. Even if it is updated every month, I used the same versions of both programs that were downloaded yesterday. The only other variable seems to be that the computer was turned off for twelve hours. Could that have made a difference? What do you think?
Suggestion: I think you might get more comments if the Verify This Word box was a little easier to figure out… perhaps with a second box next to the one containing the word to be copied so you don’t have to type directly over it. I wasn’t sure if that would work, but I’m glad it did.
Thanks for the post!
