Wireless Industry Protests Radiation Disclosure Law – States Law Is Misleading Consumers.

San Francisco is being challenged by the wireless industry [CITA] concerning the cities new law which requires radiation warnings for all cell phones. The wireless people believe that the law will mislead consumers into thinking that one phone may be safer than another. In addition the law does not address if cell phones are a hazard or not. There has been no scientific evidence to positively conclude that using a cell phone causes any type of health risks. In addition a recent article also states that:

According to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, specific absorption rate, or SAR, is “a way of measuring the quantity of radio frequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body.” For a phone to pass FCC certification and be sold in the United States, its maximum SAR level must be less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. In Europe, the level is capped at 2 watts per kilogram while Canada allows a maximum of 1.6 watts per kilogram.

My question to you is this. Should we consumers be concerned with the amount of radiation our cell phones give off?

Comments welcome.

Over at CNet they have provide a list of phone ratings for the SAR levels to help you determine just how much radiation is coming from your cell phone.

It started with a fobia of cellular antennas. Do you know any individuals who demanded to take down the antenna in is vicinity? Now at last somebody found out that cellphones spread much more radiation power than the antennas. Do you know somebody who will discard his cellphone because of radiation?
Especially when every doctor and scientist declare that there is no proven danger? The only ones who profit from tackling this “problem” are politicians and the media. You reporters are in a very bad company.

I think part of the problem may stem from people thinking “radiation” = “nuclear”. We are bathed in all forms of radiation for our entire life; the most notable is visible light. Some bandwidths of radiation are extremely harmful because of the way they interact with matter, but none of those are used by cell phones. Radio devices essentially create ordered ripples in certain frequencies that we’re already completely immersed in from the sun and other natural sources. While it’s possible that long term exposure to the slightly elevated levels you get from a cell phone antenna could be harmful I have serious doubts. Especially considering that after 20 years of widespread cell use there is not an epidemic of cancer or other side effects with even a weak correlation to amount or frequency of cell use. I would expect the ears to be rotting off a large number of people with bluetooth headsets permanently glued on their heads by now, and yet they all seem fine – if just as annoying in public.

I know this old lady that always whines about the cell tower that’s close to her house. It’s like… dude… you’re 80. You’re gonna die soon enough anyway.

Here’s a solution for all those freak shows that say we’re gonna give ourselves cancer:

STOP TALKING ON THE DAMN PHONE!

There. Now you don’t have to worry about cancer! I’m just THAT smart, aren’t I? :)

Justen: good points about the technology, but I don’t think most people even care. An explanation like the one you gave is the reason that I want to use the cell phone. The cell phone is a part of our culture so it is here to stay.

If one doesn’t like cell phones, then don’t use or own one. How difficult is that?
