Jeremy must be very young. He's being an arrogant idiot, thinking that simply being able to drive better than others is enough to avoid accidents.

Even thinking people will often continue to do anything that is legal, though, even if it's stupid, because they will statistically get away with it. Good laws help reduce the number of people doing stupid things that might hurt someone else or simply necessitate an insurance claim that we all have to pay for.

Being from CA, it's a relief that we have a hands-free, no-texting law, which includes no cell use at all for under-18 drivers. Unfortunately, many don't take it seriously. I observe drivers every day holding a cell phone to their ear (or stopped at the light way after it turns green!). First offense may be only $25, but if you have an accident while doing it, you can bet the the other party's attorney will use your illegal deed to cash in.

Finally, I don't know many teens, but my 17 year-old nephew, who never lets his iPhone out of reach, texts constantly. His parents text him, even in the house, just to get him to acknowledge this or that (Did you take out the trash? Where are you? Be home by 11:00.), without any emotion involved - and it works. They can reach him at any time and usually get a response, with no argument. Weirdest thing...

@Jeremy: If you hit me, and I find out you were texting and driving, I will get out my tire iron and beat you like the insane, asinine idiot you are. I will subsequently claim in court that I was temporarily insane due to the results of your absolute and utter stupidity. Now, if none of that made any sense to you, neither does texting and driving to me, so we are at least even in that respect.

Here's a general rule of thumb for any activity. Can you imagine Rambo doing it? Sending text messages? I don't think so!! Text messaging is obviously an activity for mentally challenged sissies. I'm not compromising my dignity.

So it's somewhat of a covert, cowardly operation, with an ulterior motive? Thanks Reflections. Seems like a plausible explanation, but, it doesn't account for the the scenario depicted in this article, that of doing it while driving. There'd be no reason for subterfuge while driving. Indeed, in my mind, it would seem to be an enormous, unnecessary hindrance.

I believe the younger people use texting to avoid others from over hearing their conversations. They seem to feel that the codes they use keep their parents from knowing what they are saying, even if a parent were to read a message. They can text while in school, church, anywhere a voice conversation would be disruptive.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me this concept of text messaging? I fail to comprehend why anyone would use such a tedious, inefficient means of communicating, compared to simply calling the other person, and speaking to them directly. Despite asking many people, who like myself, don't employ this method, I've never gotten an answer that satisfied me. Can someone please enlighten me? Thank you.

I hate people who text while they drive. I've had 3 close calls in the last week because of morons who were texting while driving.

I don't care how good a driver you *think* you are, you are not that good. Period.

Having said that, I also hate people who read, apply makeup, shave, or do anything else that severely distracts them from the road. Again, you are not as good a driver as you think you are.

I think they should make texting and talking on the phone while driving illegal. Research has shown that drivers driving while talking on the phone are more dangerous than drunk drivers.

Cheers!

Jeremy, So you think you are a good driver. What happens when you are busy txting and a little kid runs out in to the road. That split second that you are too busy looking at your phone could make the differance between not only hiting that kid, but killing them. I think you need to grow up. When driving, it is not always about YOUR mistakes, it is about other peoples mistakes aswell. Would you really like the death of a small child because YOU thought that txting was more important.

I neither text nor make calls while driving. I mean - Hell, why not crack open a beer or take a nap too? Driving is for DRIVING. Kind of hard to have both hands on the wheel and an eye on the road like you are supposed to be doing. This is such a no-brainer. Obviously it should be illegal, as should be using a phone at all. It's almost laughable that we should need a law to enforce such common sense into people.
