Immigration Reform Will Cause Taxes to Skyrocket… Basic Services to be Stretched Beyond Capacity

On May 17, 2007, an agreement reached between Democrats and Republicans regarding immigration reform has changed nothing about the underlying politics behind immigration reform and is likely to meet a similar fate as the bill proposed last year. In fact, this time around some of the biggest players have less incentive to cut tough deals with the presidential election approaching, and with Congress locked in battle with the White House over Iraq.
According to presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, this latest overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws backed by GOP primary rivals Senators John McCain, (R-Ariz), Ted Kennedy, (D-Mass), and President Bush — focuses on the creation of the so-called Z visa. “I don’t know whether the conferees in this discussion realize that we are authorizing a new visa class, the Z visa which would say to everybody who’s here illegally that they can stay indefinitely,” amounting to a form of amnesty. In fact it would give people who are here illegally a very substantial advantage over those who’ve been standing in line in their home country.
Additionally, James Rowley from Bloomberg’s reports that the top 2008 Democratic hopefuls state that,: Senator Barack Obama, (D-Ill.), he is “still concerned;” Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, (D-N.Y.), she is “worried about the creation of a new underclass”; and former Senator John Edwards, (D-N.C.), he doesn’t like the “poorly conceived guest worker program” suggesting that none of them are comfortable with the reform. Given that, Senator Ted Kennedy, (D-Mass), “may have a tougher time selling the plan to fellow Democrats than to Republicans” forcing Bush to deliver 60 or 70 Republican votes in the House for the compromise to have a chance and I personally don’t think he has that kind of juice any more.
To make the immigration reform viable, Los Angeles Times reporter, Richard Simon states: “In any job program, the bill should contain the following restrictions:
If a U.S. employer wants to hire Mexicans, the employer must:
- advertise for them in Mexico
- NOT pay less than minimum wage
- must assign the job to the prospect before the prospect can come to the U.S.
- pay all benefits to the Mexican employee that he would pay to an American employee including
- Income Tax
- Medicare
- Health Benefits with no decreased benefits for lower paid employees.”
Overall, I think that this new agreement means America will suffer from overcrowded classrooms and emergency rooms and experience overwhelmed police and fire departments. I also think that it could hasten the insolvency of the Social Security System, Medicare and welfare programs, as well as, cause taxes to skyrocket. It’s a gloomy scenario that could become reality and according to Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation “It is the most expensive public policy choice seen in Washington in a quarter-century” since you’re essentially granting illegal immigrants eligibility to Social Security, to Medicare, to other welfare programs for the elderly like Medicaid.
So, while acknowledging that many of the illegal immigrants currently in our country are viable members and fulfill a real need the strain on some services is already being felt. The Texas Hospital Association alone reported a 30 percent increase in emergency room visits between 1997 and 2005, partly due to the flood of illegal immigrants, many of whom have no health insurance and are unable to pay for services.
The problem is multifaceted, however, with compassion favoring dealing gently with illegal immigrants but common sense pushing for a crackdown on the same. This is seen in an ABC/Post poll that found that three-quarters of Americans say the United States is not doing enough to keep illegal immigrants out of the country. Additional opposition comes from seventy-four percent who support the idea of sending the National Guard to patrol the border with Mexico, a suggestion which President Bush proposed in a national address just a few days ago.
One must also note that the current reform proposal doesn’t play fair when there are millions of people around the world with skills and experience that would contribute to our way of life and are told no because the 12 million illegal immigrants, many without any marketable skills, get to stay. However, my major concern is our supposed war on terrorism and the need to protect ourselves from those who desire to harm the American citizenry. How can we determine who should be deported or not allowed to enter if every one here on expired visas like the terrorists who were behind 9/11 are granted amnesty? It seems crazy to me to even consider the possibility of granting potential terrorists, killers, rapists, gangsters, etc. amnesty if our desire is to protect our sovereign republic from those in the world who wish to harm us.

Pirillo come on, this country has been good to you. Why are you fearful of Mexicans. When was the last time a Mexican perform any kind of terrorism agaisnt America? Try never. You are misdirecting your fear of 9/11. It is fear, ignorance and racists who drive this propaganda campaing. No one talks about the millions of illegal chinese, canadians and russians. You look Italian to me. We are a nation of inmigrants and we need people who want to work hard. Just because they look different and do not speak well your language do no mean they are bad. Remember that capital powers that be (Corporate conglomerate) drive their employment. Border and fences is a fallacy in the mind of many. You think all crooked politicians care abbout us, the american people. They don’t. If americans do not wake up, they will let republicans turn this country in a dictatorship. It was blinded faith with the help of a propaganda machine that ended up creating the Nazis. Sound like the cendored CNN, NBC and ABC to me. To afraid to do real journalism and tell the truth and impeach this President for the liar and the crook he is.
If you want to be fearful, be fearful about the people in government that are taking your rights away in the name of fear avery day. On top they are doing nothing to protect this country from attacks. How about that for agendas.

I usually am accused of having a soft heart when it comes to things like this [along with possibly a soft head]. In the case of immigration, I feel for these people, but someone here is going to get hurt. It is a matter of who we decide will be hurt, and why.
I wonder why all of this is necessary, because, if I understand the law here in California, one must have a social security card to be employed. I’m fairly sure that this is a federal statute so it should apply all over the nation. If the enforcement of this one thing were strictly controlled, there should be no problems. If you cannot work here, you won’t be staying very long with relatives, ’cause unless they are wealthy, you’ll be out the door and back to where you can get a job.
As for immigration of any kind, until we reach zero population growth in this country, we have no business bringing more people in. This could change if this country could get behind some things like terra-forming, lowering carbon dioxide emissions, and renewable power, but until the changes are made it’s time to put the collective foot down.

Hi Marc
Great input. Glad to hear from you. What is terra-forming? I have never heard of it.
Have a good day. Jackie

Dear A True American
Reflections is not written by Pirillo, just so you know. Also this article is not just against Mexicans as I have many friends that are from Mexico. However, they did enter the country legally. The fear that I have is two-sided. First terrorists can enter along the Mexican border as well as the Canadian border. THese individuals are may not have originated in either country but from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia Etc. We have many individuals from the above countries who have entered on visas, let them lapse, and are still here. Why?
Also, I must admit that I agree with you regarding our evil president and many others in power. In fact my husband and I watched all the King’s Men last night. It is a story of a real organization that assists certain persons to gain power. If you have read any of my other articles you will see that I blast the current administration on a regular basis. I feel that Bush is as evil and manipulative a person as any of us could ever imagine. However, we are stuck with him. I am a democrat and also agree that the Republican’s desire to create a dictatorship and that we need to make sure and vote them out of power in the next election.
Have a good day and please understand that my article was not meant as a slam at Mexicans, but at the way many enter this country illegally. Have a good day. Jackie

Terra-forming is molding the landscape from something inhospitable to something people can easily live with and on. If we were to put forth the effort, much in the way of FDR’s WPA, we could put the entire country to work, and reclaim huge wastelands [most notably the Mojave Desert]. Sometimes it is making land where there was none before, like Daly City, across the bay from San Francisco, where the land mass was moved outward into the ocean, by using reclaimed waste compacted.
To those who say we need the Mojave as it is, I say that because the wildlife and flora are so sparse, it could easily be shrunken by 75% and still comfortably host all there is now.

Dear Marc
Your insights and knowledge are astounding. I really appreciate it that you took the time to teach me something I did not know. My husband was a police detective in Daly City for 16 years and even he did not know that Daly City was created that way.
I think your idea of using the Mojave Desert is wonderful. Why don’t you consider running for an environmental office somewhere? Have a nice afternoon. Jackie
