Rosenberg’s latest thriller, SULLIVAN’S EVIDENCE, the third in a series is a sure-fire winner. The well-developed story is dramatic, detailed and full of terrifying suspense, as well as, an excellent look at the California criminal justice system.
Featuring returning protagonist, parole office, Carolyn Sullivan, Rosenberg continues the series with the savvy investigator tracking down a violent rapist amid a number of new murders. As in previous books, this fearless mother of two finds herself embroiled in a dangerous mix of men but Marcus Wright is not like the others and will risk his life to protect Carolyn.
One note on the negative side is that the book needs a better proof reader with cases in point being that while Carolyn’s car is supposed to an Infiniti, (even though she often drive’s her son’s Honda) at one point she gets into her BMW. Then in another chapter, her daughter is cooking corn, but drains the peas while in still another chapter, her friend supposedly drops her off a block from her home to pick up her car and then leave but then they sit in the driveway talking before she goes in.
On the other hand, the plot is full of twists and turn that the author uses to keep our interest, including dark passages that intimate the murderer could possibly be her new love interest. Additional interest was created when multiple homicides are discovered, fitting the profile of Carl Holden, a convicted serial rapist, who was released from jail when forensic lab chief, Robert Abernathy, was proven to have tampered with/not-studied evidence. Once Carolyn becomes aware of the commonality of the victims, she believes beyond any doubt that is the case. However, a desire to do something does not prevent someone, probably Holden, from attempting to destroy one of the key people who locked him away for eight years making her children a fine target.
Overall, Sullivan’s third legal-crime thriller is a superb tale that provides readers with a deep look inside the California criminal justice system and this new addition to her series is sure to make a scramble as one of the top books of the year.
